Personally I've only met one SK chapter that made me cringe. Basically they were like the stereotype of a sorority.
Other than them, the ones I've met have been very nice and usually known for being the most down to earth chapter on thier campus. Also, I hear that they are most often the most diverse for thier campus.
So my overall opinion of SK (with the exception of the one chapter) would be that they're basically "the girl next door".
But go through rush and go with your heart. I've watched chapters go from major powerhouses in size to barely nothing and back again; so if the size of the chapter bothers you there's no guarantee that the large ones will stay that way.

SoCal-
Your chapter is still very much the girls next door. You guys have such strong sisterhood. It's wonderful. And they got a full pledge class this fall!

Let's face it
In every chapter across the US there are going to be fat, ugly, tall, pretty, bitcy, nice, uppity, down-to-earth, skinny, etc type of people. I think we can all think of one person in each chapter that we like and one that we dislike. One person becomes the basis for which the whole sorority is based. Why does it even matter what kind of house Sigma Kappa is? They can't be that bad or they wouldn't exist. All houses have faults so that is why we all need to work to build stronger ties in the Greek community instead of tearing eachother down.

Thank you AlphaSigLana. It's nice to hear someone say that every so often and remind us what really matters.

I'm way late, but somebody asked about the Sigma Kappas at KU. With the exception of my old roommate, they're all very fun, down-to-earth girls. They're in the middle of the pack grade wise. I think they have about 130 girls in their house, which is about average here.

i know this post is kinda out dated, but after reading some of the comments i had to respond. this one girl is talking about MY chapter!
"at penn state sororities live on floors of dorm building but sometimes they can't fill the whole floor so independents share with them. I lived with sigma krappa and they were so rude. They never even made an attempt to talk to us or even look us in the eye for that matter."
when she posted this, it was during my pledge period, so i know the girls she's talking about. if they were rude to her there must've been a reason. i might be biased against my own sorority, but when i found out where this poster joined, it made sense that she was bitter about us. anyway to make a long story short, we don't fill our ENTIRE floor, because university housing won't let us. we are only allowed to fill 20 out of 32 rooms because some of the other dorm floors only have 20 rooms, so this way it's kept equal. so yes there are independents on our floor. we also aren't allowed to talk to the girls going through recruitment who live on our floor, while recruitment is going on. it's at the beginning of the year so if you're an incoming freshman, it might seem rude that these girls on your floor aren't taking the steps to get to know you, but we're not allowed to during recruitment. anyway, it really upset me to see this post. i feel like it was unjustified and while the other comments about other chapters were upsetting, this hit home and i felt the need to defend my chapter!
sigma kappa is an awesome organization and i'm proud to wear our letters!!

PSU SigKap -
Would the Panhellenic maybe permit you to slip notes under the door for the non-SK's on your floor explaining about rush rules? Something explaining you are happy to be sharing the floor with them, but right now because of rush rules you aren't permitted to interact with them. They might understand it better then!

Hi girls!
I'm going to UCRiverside this fall, and Sigma Kappa is my first choice... although I admit that I've only researched sororities on the internet.
I agree with the other posts who said that chapters vary, and there really can't be any uniform discription for a sorority. I hope that these Sigma Kappa girls at UCR are going to be as wonderful as all of the girls on this board!
XOXO,
Annie.

Our chapter is really strong there.
Just remember to follow your heart.

they're snotty, uppity, bratty and pretty much vapant. the girls that i've been in contact with are all your typical sorority girls, with the black puffy jacket, black pants, sunglasses in wintertime with thier cell phone in one hand and thier kate spade handbag in the other. thier nickname on our campus is sigma jap-pa and with good reason. many are jewish (which i have NO problem with, PLEASE don't think i'm being religiously biased...it's just a fact) and are very jap-py...flaunting thier money. the ones that have been in classes with me haven't been that bright, either. they're either fawned all over the TKE's that are in the class, or just haven't shown up at all.
i know this is harsh, but you know what? here, it's true. as i read about the "girl next door" posts, i had this look on my face like "huh" sigma KAPPA? are we talking about the SAME sigma kappa?" sorry, but those chicks just don't do it for me here.

Ok first of all I go to Hartford also and I have to say that you are completely wrong, not to be rude to you or anything but your not even really part of greek life you are in the music sorority which is not"stream greek life". I happen to only know a couple of them but they happen to be some of the nicest girls on campus. There are other sororites on our campus that are much worse when it comes to being snotty and bratty. Also your music sorority must be the only one that calls them sigma Jap-pa cause i have never heard anyone call them that. Sorry to be rude but i feel the need to stick up for them cause they are a lot better then some of the others on our campus.

Im glad you felt the need to stick up for the Sigmas on your campus and I know you dont mean to be rude ... But the music sorority IS a sorority. You should give them the same respect for being a GLO as you do social sororities. And Im not trying to be rude, Im just making a point. But I DO thank you VERY much for defending the Sigmas. Its good to hear that everyone doesnt seem them in that light.

I am pretty sure she went Gamma Phi..... but I remember thinking that there was some dirty rushing going on with that because a girl on GC communicated with her on here and then approached her during rush, etc.
I thought it was kinda fishy! hehe...
But I hope she is happy at her new home. I am sure G Phi B is lucky to have her.
