You're incredibly lucky to have the life you have. I'm incredibly lucky to have escaped my circumstances. But I guess the difference between you and me is that for me, it doesn't matter where you came from -- the only thing that matters is where you're going.

Look, we all try to make the best of what we have while we're here on this Earth. For my life to be the best it can be, I choose to socialize with people that respect others. I'm not understanding the "worthy of knowing" thing, that gives the impression that I think people are beneath me or that I'm better than someone. I don't think that, my only point is that a sorority is an expensive hobby, and I opt not to live with someone (with a history of gang membership) who is more likely to steal or break the law.

I don't see the discrepancy- if girls in my chapter hazed or jumped in someone, that makes them a criminal, too. I'd quit the next day and get rid of the letters b/c I wouldn't want to be affiliated with that, either.

I'm going to have to agree with my sister.

I could look past the fact that someone was in a gang, or even that someone was a felon -- in the past. I can't speak for my organization, obviously, but that's my feeling. You can't control where you are born and where you grow up and what you might have to do to survive and I don't feel that I should judge someone based on that.

Having worked with felons, I can say that just because someone has committed (or plead guilty to, which doesn't necessarily indicate actual guilt) a crime does not alone make him or her a bad person unworthy of brotherhood or sisterhood.

I think there's a difference in how people see whites in gangs versus minorities in gangs. More specifically, whites in gangs are more viewed as doing "wild and crazy things as part of their youth" versus minorities are viewed as the "future criminals of America." This extends to the behaviors of youth who are not in gangs, as well.

But, that's off topic. Just ignore me
No. Wrong. I view ANYONE who is/was a member of a gang as being THE criminals of America. I don't care if you are red, purple, white, green, black, or striped!

Yep, I've someone turn purple, more of a violet color, but it wasn't cute.

And I have seen a man who has had himself tattoed to look like a tiger -- orange and black stripes.

I can't think of anyone green, but the point is, smarty pants, if they are/were in a gang, I don't give a flying squirrel what anybody looks like, where they come from, what degree(s) they may or not have, or what color they are, but I will not be in favor of them joining my sisterhood.
