Exclamation VERY IMPORTANT-Greek Life Image

Hello,
I am a Kappa Kappa Gamma at the Zeta Alpha chapter. Recently, we started a post on our forum about the Greek life image and we decided to do something to better it.
There is an increasing lack of support for Greek life in the media, and we would like to start a NPC/NIC campaign and we need a representative from each organization. We would like each organization to have a “captain” to assist with the letter writing we will be doing to NPC/NIC. If you are interested, please email me at kcibulka@babson.edu.
This is a very serious matter and we need support. Please check out our post entitled “Greek Life Image” under the Kappa Kappa Gamma forum. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
Katie Cibulka

im going to be very naive and ask a load of stupid questions ok? im an irish student and dont have much knowledge on frats etc except what i see on tv, which i know is probably a load of rubbish. If you dont have greek heritage what is the attraction to the greek like as you call it? The impression given of this in Ireland is not so much of a brotherhood but i suppose of a house of guys who throw parties and so on. Please dont get mad at me with what i say its just i really dont have a clue! Im so interested it it though and i wish i could go to college in the states or canada to experience this for myself.
What is it that you think that the essence of being in a fraternity? I have read a few posts and many have mentioned that some of your members are only in them for the parties and girls.
What is a chapter? How do you decide which frat you want to be a part of?Is it hard to get in?

Greek life

Fraternities were developed for a group of men to form a bond of brotherhood, no matter race, creed, or religion. Most fraternities were formed in the 1850's to 1920's at a time when american men valued a common bond, similiar to the bond felt between family, hence "brotherhood". All fraternities are founded upon a certian outlook on life, but most certainly a focus on brotherhood.
My fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi, founded in 1899 was founded upon the ideal of brotherhood and actually was the first fraternity to allow men of Jewish AND Christian faith to belong to the same fraternity. The two founders were friends for life and decided to join a fraternity together but one or the other was not allowed. Hence they developed thier own fraternity Delta Sigma Phi.
A fraternity image is developed from the National name, the local chapter(a division of the fraternity at a certian university), and the men that make it. A fraternity can bring you nothing or it can bring you everything possible for a successfull 4 years in college and friends for life. A fraternity is like a family or group of close friends, it's what you put into it.
Some care for girls and parties, well sure, that's great. But a fraternity is more... bonds, companionship, trials, tribulations, successes, joys, failures, family...
To be a part of a fraternity you must be of good character, do fairly well in school, and have drive, leadership, and the want. Membership is not automatic, there is a pledge period. After, at most, 4 months you would be allowed to participate as a full fledged member if you make it through this process.
How hard a fraternity is to get into or whether the fraternity is "good" or "bad' depends on the individual. Ask whether you could see yourself with them, have a drink, party, go through ups and downs, will they be there for you? that's what you have to ask.
Hope this helps,
Matt C.

By the way we got a BIG Irish guy here at Texas Tech Delta Sig. Last name Fornasar. Listens to the Chieftans and everything haha!
