Re: Re: Soror's Shop in Ohio
I have heard this but I don't understand the reasoning. If we could not wear the letters or shield on the back, why are jackets made?

I have wondered the same thing. I was told that we cannot wear letters, shield, etc. on our Behinds. Well you learn something new every day.

Re: Re: Re: Soror's Shop in Ohio
It said that the stole comes with ONE symbol and ONE crest. Since my mother sews, I would have order the what I wanted and have her take off the extra stuff so I can put it on something else.

Actually, the stole is kinda busy if you ask me: It's got the letters, the shield, african violets, Fortutude, AND and an elephant--that's a bit much!!! We got the point when we saw the letters DSQ on red.

The elephant is not to be used with any official symbols.

Why?
No one has ever told me you can't wear the symbols for DST on the back of your jacket/t-shirt. My crossing jacket is Red with White DST letters on the back! Someone tell me why you aren't suppose to do this? Thanks!

I have her stole
In 98 my beloved sands bought my #1 and I as well as our KAppa friend the stoles but ours were very tasteful. When I get home I will scan you all a pic of us with them.
In Nawlins a lot of sorors got stoles as well from Soror's booth and they were BUSY AS you know what but mine is very simple. It has Fortitude and my name, date, and Omicron Theta.
I think she put all of that on there just to show you all that is available.

Re: Why?
I never heard that you can't wear letters on your back. Now on your behind is a different story, I've seen many pulled up with having their jackets tied around their waste with their letters touching their azz. Easy way to lose a jacket!

Hi Reds6 that's what I am saying! Never heard of it. Is it a regional thing or what? If the informatin is put out there. then the answer as to why should also be put out there. I want to know why?

Hope this works
I could not find my color photos but this is one of Kappa and I receiving an award before graduation and we wore them but we accidentally put his on backwards.
On our stoles under the fortitude is my name and under DSQ is chapter of initiation and initiation date.

Letters on the back...
I was "made" with the understanding that the crest (which has letters on it) should always be close to your heart. I realize that this may be one of those unofficial protocol traditions that some of us may (or may not) follow. We all know that there are some things that are just flat out NO-NOs, even though they aren't specified/pointed out in the P&T manual. The letters on the back thing stems from is a kind of symbolism/icon. Recognizing the lifetime commitment we make to our orgs, we shouldn't ever want to out them behind us, but instead be actively involve, keeping our zeal for our sorority/frat in the forefront of our lives.
We don't like the greek rugs because we cringe at the thought of someone wiping their dirty shoes/feet on our letters. That's because the letters serve as an icon--kinda like the American flag.
That's the rationale that was handed down to me...

Okay, Okay!
I take it back!
If you feel comfortable wearing your letters/crest on your back, then by all means--
Do yo' thang, don't be scurred!
I just choose not to.
But, don't listen to me, y'all--I'm one of those Sorors who loves the call, feels the DUCK, and upholds COLEMAN LOVE to the fullest (and won't back down when challenged/confronted about it). So what do I know, right?
Needless to say, if there's nothing in writing against rockin' letters on your back, then there musn't be anything wrong with it. I'd never say anything to a Soror who does it since it's not wrong by official P&T standards. It's just not something the411 would do. To each her own, Lovely Ladies!
And (of course) I'm Out!

Whew, thank goodness! I have two windbreakers--one red with the Crest on the back and one black with the Symbols on the back--and I love them both. I guess I just like the idea that folks will know I am a Delta coming and going.

Personally, I wouldn't wear the greek letters on my back either, but I do have a denim shirt with an "shadowed" imprint of the crest on the back. That's about as far as I would take it.
I know there is nothing in print about letters on your back, but for me its a personal thing. I kind of see it as similar to wearing them on your leg (I've reformed from that) or anywhere below the belt.

I also just thought of something Soror 411. A rationale FOR wearing letters on the back, other than the above, is that the back symbolizes toil and labor (ie backbreaking work). DST is something that I labor for, because we all know how 'we' feel about those who don't work! Whatcha think?

That works! Although I think we could justify putting letters almost any where if we really tried hard enough. I've seen some pretty FLY jackets out there with the crest/letters on on the back, but I'd rather have my PERSONAL info (line name, #, etc.) back there. Of course, I don't do crossing jackets anymore 'cuz I'm an old lady now , and especially because I work on such a HUGE campus. Too many wanna-be's are in my grill when I sport DST 'nalia nowadays. So, now I just do little, discreet things that only another Soror or greek would pick up on if they didn't already know I'm a Delta.
But, if you walked into my office or my house, you'd think I robbed Headquarters considering all the elephants I have! If someone buys/gives me another elephant...
