Y'all are making me want to get married (to whom though , LOL)...I rarely normally think about this kind of stuff.

I belive that your bridemaid's are a reflection of you--specifically how pretty their dresses are is a reflection of YOUR taste (heck, it's YOUR wedding), therefore they should look pretty. When I get married, my bridesmaids will be wearing beautiful, elegant, yet timeless dresses. The details will be different though (like if my gown is strapless, their dresses will have spaghetti straps)...

Most of the time, the bride is glowing anyway, just b/c it's her special day. That glow allows her to outshine all of the bridemaids several times over.

When I got married, December 2002, I gave my 10 (yes, 10 bridesmaids and 500 guests) the choice of a $250 dress that is definitely wearable for many events or a cheaper dress from David's Bridal that ran about $120.

Everyone of them chose the more expensive dress. It had a higher quality of workmanship and had a much more elegant look. They were black velvet halter tops with a black satin skirt. I had an ivory and cafe au lait dress. We all carried red roses and the church was decorated with red roses and white lights. (It was Dec. 21st...)

I think it should be that the bride gets noticed before the bridesmaids. But, I don't think a bride should try to make her friends look bad! One of my attendants (my cousin) was in Playboy. I didn't try to make her look like crap just so I could look better. I think that's disrespectful to your friends to do that kind of thing.

Jill, your bridal photo is one of the most elegant I've ever seen! Very, very chic!

I know that I'm being dreadfully old-fashioned, but I just can't see the black bridesmaid dress yet. I know, there's a thousand good reasons for it, but black is just not... bridal. We did just go to a Christmas time wedding where the bridesmaids wore black velvet tops and plaid organza skirts (the groom wore his kilt!!), and that looked great. I guess I'm being a hypocrite!

Not counting when I was a bride or flower girl, I've worn:

aqua with limegreen trim;

baby blue

purple (picture huge, flamenco-type sleeves!)

and

peach with a dark-red cape.

While none of these could ever really be worn again, the last was the worst!! The cape had a hood, which we wore up, and we carried muffs. My daddy said we all looked like Charlie Manson's girls!

Should Mr. honeychile & I ever set a date, my one attendant will wear royal blue, and she will pick the dress. I don't care if she gets it at JC Penney's, so long as it's appropriate & the right color!

And I'm thinking that the black & white photography looks great!!

You know, it just occurred to me....

it's funny that some women choose awful dresses for their BMs because they (the bride) want to be the center of attention.... but when they put those awful dresses on the girls, they're really drawing attention TO the bridesmaids! A badly dressed woman at a wedding is going to stick out like a sore thumb... especially if she's standing next to the bride at the altar. If the Bride dresses the women well, the BMs will actually be more "part of the scenery"

One more reason I'm glad we're having all guys.

I am going to be in two weddings next year. In one, we're getting separates. All of us will wear the same skirt (light purple A-line, very pretty) and we can pick our own style of top. The other one, our dresses haven't been decided, but that might be separates as well. (The bride's requirements: it has to be purple, should have sleeves since it is a fall wedding, and it should be something where we can wear our own bras/underwear and not have to wear something special. All fine by me!) I'm busty, so a strapless dress Would Not Work for me.
