Cool

John, I change my earlier suggestion (it is on a different post. Can you shut down the chat room for maybe 2 weeks or so. That should get rid of the Greek nationals. It won't really make a difference to us, since none of us are using the Chat Room anyway! Then maybe when you reopen it, you could call it "Fraternity/Sorority Chat", and hopefully the Greek nationals won't come back.

Thanks for all the comments & suggestions!

The main reason I suggested the possibility of adding non greek-related forums is because there seems to be a growing interest in these types of discussions here. People are now using greekchat.com not only to discuss greek-business but also to discuss more general non-greek-related topics with fellow greeks. By opening up new forums for these kinds of topics we will be able to keep the forums which are focused on greek-business free of the more general non-greek-related discussions.

About the "Sex & Relationships" potential forum, I should have thought a bit more about the name - "Dating & Relationships" would probably be a better forum title. I know the topic itself, especially if the word sex was in the title, could make for some inappropriate discussions - but I can assure you all that these forums, & this one in particular, will be actively moderated with any inappropriate posts being dealt with right away. Each forum can have up to 4 moderators, so maybe with a "Dating & Relationships" forum - having 4 moderators might be a good idea.

About having a place for affiliation in profiles - I will work on getting this added into a future upgrade of this forum software.

Regarding the chat system - yes, there is a *situation* with greek nationals having a large presence in the chat rooms. I can kind of understand the confusion for them, the domain name "greekchat.com" kind of makes sense for their use I guess. I'll probably do something similar to what michelle_azd suggested and if that doesn't help we will work towards setting up a second chat system that integrates directly with this message board system - one which only registered users can access & moderators will have some control over users who abuse the chat.

AlphaChiGirl - Public Relations sounds like a good one to consider, thanks for this suggestion.

equeen - about the forum you suggest for groups which are smaller than nationals but larger than locals, what do you think we could title that kind of forum?

John, here's a few ideas:
"Young GLOs"
"Up & Coming GLOs"
"Newer GLOs"
"Recently Established GLOs"

Whatever the title is, a description that clarifies that forum is geared toward smaller, "non-national" GLOs ought to be added.

If I can throw my 2 cents in (like anyone can stop me), I like the name "Up and Coming GLOs" It's cute and inspirational.

I also feel that greekchat.com should remain primarily for greek issues.
I like AlphaChiGirl's suggestion for a public relations forum especially since that's an issue for a lot of chapters out there. AlphaChiGirl, if you have any PR questions, I'm more than happy to help you out!
P.S. John,
I figured out what my posting problem was. Thank you for e-mailing me!

I have to say 'DITTO!' to what everyone else has said. We get off topic a a lot. I can appreciate everyone's opinions on the other issues, but I think we should try to stay as focused as possible.

John, you might want to set up a forum for "Race Relations Discussions". This is obviously a hot topic for discussion and it the pace of its discussion won't be diminishing any time soon.

Just a few thoughts re: starting IFC/NPHC/NPC boards (and please remember PFA if these are created), there are is already a rush/recruitment board, but still questions re: this are posted on the Greek Life board. Perhaps it's because we like learning the other groups' ways of doing things or it may be because Greek Life is open to unregistered users?

Thumbs up

BFulton..

I think Greek Life is so popular for both of the reasons you gave

1)you don't have to register

2)we can learn from each other!

Although I do think that all of us (myself included) need to post our topics in appropriate forums (how many rush questions are on the greek life board, for example?)

Maybe instead of adding additional boards perhaps expanding on the description of discussion should be looked into. We have several boards that are not used fully.

For those interested in dating relationship discussions, why not expand the description on Social, to be entitled - "Social Activities and Interactions" Such a forum could encompass dating, relationships, greek social functions. I would sugguest Maybe finding a way to expand the local forum to include the small national groups. I can see a strong overlap of issues and problems that might face both. Also some locals might aspire to eventually expand.

I think creating forums for each umbrella greek organization is unnecessary at this time. While each group might handle different activies situations differently. The forums can help us educate each other on our interactions and we can learn of the similiarities that exist between the different groups.

I definitely would like to stick to greek related topics. But what I woud like to see/read as an offspring, is greek functions. I like to know what is going on with other organizations arties, walk-a-thons, community related projects, all of that

In one way, I think that we should leave everything as is, in another, if we specify boards more, we are going to find weaknesses in the chain that might need some repairing. For instance: Fundraising doesn't get many posts, that proves to me that people are not concerned with fundraising--which indicates a weak link in the greek chain.

Second, I think we should stick to greek related topics. I'm tired of all the topics about race frankly. They get more posts than anything, and they are the most controversial. To me, they are pointless. Sorry to say, I realize that racial issues are important in our society, but here: 1) nobody is getting anywhere 2) there is no effect being brought on by the conversation-meaning when all is said and done, nothing will have changed (it takes more than talk to make a differance) 3) the questions might have a 'greek ring' to them, but most are designed to stir people up, and don't have anything to do with greek related issues--which is the sole reason I post here and come here. 4) the constant slander/bashing is annoying and childish considering nobody knows the background or ANYthing about anyone else on this board. 5) It creates a weekness in whatever greek bonds have been made here because a) now everyone is taking things personally and b) we are fighting amongst ourselves. Frankly I'm just tired of the whole thing. Since the racial issue has come up, practically nothing else has been talked about. It seems that nobody wants to listen and act like adults and respect others opinions, and I think that is key to good discussion. I realize that now, I'm open to slander because i'm obviously racist for not wanting to talk about it. . . believe that if you want because at this point it doesn't bother me. I'm racist if I post, so being racist for not posting seems to not be a big deal. And to be quite honest, I will not be posting to anything here unless it is greek related. That's my 2 cents.

I would have to agree with this point 10000%! I too would like to see a different forum to discuss the race issues...not because I don't think they are important, but because there are definitely enough of them on the so called General greek forum to warrant a new category. Plus, by making people have to be registered, we can cut down on the number of unregistered people posting one thing and then posting again under a different name to "agree" with themselves (which I think is very obvious in some posts!) This will make it easier for users who want to get some general info without having to weed through endless threads that ultimately end up with some people acting like children.

AXO Alum- I thought I was the only who thought it seemed like people were posting unregistered to pat themselves on the back. LOL!

Race Forum- I have to disagree here. I DON'T think there should be a race issues forum, and I think the Race topics that aren't related to greek issues should be deleted. There was one topic that 'kind of related' to greek issues, "BGLOs = Equality?" but of course it got out of hand. The topic "Black Men and White Women, is it a problem" had nothing to do with greek issues and look where it went, to heck in a hand basket.

I too am tired of all the race topics on this board. Don't get me wrong, I think that Race Issues are very important to discuss, but there is a place for everything and greekchat isn't that place. It probably wouldn't bother me as much if the arguments weren't circular and if people didn't get attacked for their opinion.

*ching* $.01
