Post Survival

It just dawned on me that recently American TV viewers are in tone with shows that eliminate the weakest. These survival programs are growing more in popularity seemingly everyday. A good friend of mine, also an AKA, carries a portable mini TV with her so she can view Survivor and of course some other shows if away form home. I am starting to wonder if these new programs are reflective of our culture and current times.

Professor,
First I would like to say interesting post and I hope that it starts some good conversation. I think that this question should also be answered after taking into consideration what Dexter said under the Big Brother thread. Since Darwin, society has always been about survival of the fittest--the only problem is that the criteria that are set up around this idea of "fitness" are somewhat arbitrary and have nothing to do really with a person's own innate ability to survive, particularly in this day and age. I also think that if we, humans, are as evolved as we claim to be then we should not be allowing any of our kind to perish under the guise of such a theory. Those of us who are "strong" should do our utmost to help the "weak". I think that I have made myself clear, but I can never be sure. If you want any clarification, please let me know.

Greetings men of Alpha Phi Alpha, to respond to this post... I really don't understand why people are tuned in to something that is the least thought provoking series on T.V. If this is a reflection of the direction our culture is going in than I need to throw my TV in the trash and continue to read more books!

While I agree with you TX_AKA (Phi-Skee)...

I do think that there is something that we can easily extract from these shows...reality of our differences...

IN many cases we see "good-hearted" white folks afraid of average Black man...and mad at Average Black women...that speaks volumes to me in a time when some black people think that racism is a thing of the past....

I think people want to critically analyze some more real life setting than their own life...

I know I enjoyed the episodes of Road Rules (on MTV) when FRAT Kefla from Alabama was on..it reminded me of my change when I was cast into an environment where all white people existed...and there was no safe black space where I could just kick it!!!

Ya HEARD!

06...08...all the rest just imitate (ha ha ha, meant in fun)

I am,

The Ice Cold Kreator

Well I personally like Survivor and Big Brother. I don't really know why but they just seem like the most interesting show on tv besides those "other" shows that are on tv. Besides the fact that these shows are truly about GREED (monetarily) and unfairly vote people off (especially survivor) but they are the "best" shows on TV for the summerr. Unlike Survivor, on Big Brother (even though its 99 cents a minute) the American people can vote off who they want. Although I was upset when they voted Mega (William) off because he was too real, I was extremely glad when the voted Jordan off because she created too much confusion and havoc. I can't believe that David Letterman would endorse her to stay on but hey that was his choice.

Well I guess I rambled on long enough
