That leaves the question of where the rumor came from -- probably just a miscommunication in the chain between the chapter, the traveling consultant, and the people at headquarters. We've all had that sort of thing happen at some point.
So, I guess the lesson of the story is to ask, "Hey, has anyone called the (name office with highest authority over daily fraternity operations) yet to confirm this?" when word of these sorts of directives comes from consultants and advisors. If a policy decision seems like something we should be hearing from higher up, it probably is.
I feel a little silly because I really ought to know that already. Maybe I didn't think of it because it wouldn't really have been appropriate for me to make the call myself, but there's no reason I couldn't have suggested it.
Ah, well. Life goes on.
