Derwin Gray II, MD shares not only a fraternal legacy with his father, Derwin Gray, Sr, MD but also a vocational one. Derwin Gray II, MD, a 2011 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College followed in his father's footsteps in pledging Omega Psi Phi (Psi Chapter 2010, Morehouse College), just as his father did in 1976 in Alpha Chapter at Howard University. He also went to medical school and became a Ob/Gyn physician just like his father. His father, who served on the Board of Directors of his medical school (Eastern Virginia Medical School) at the time was there at his White Coat Ceremony and bestowed his hood at his graduation. He has now joined his father in his practice at the Virginia Center for Women in Chesapeake, VA. The true legacy that was passed on was a legacy of service which inspired the Son to take up his mantle of medicine.
It also attests to the power of the legacy of HBCUs. As a high achieving student at the prestigious Norfolk Academy, he had a scholarship to attend an Ivy League university which he turned down to attend Morehouse College, a decision he has said confused many of his white classmates/friends. He was convinced that the nurture and influences he would receive at Morehouse College would make him a better human being, especially as an African American male.
