Phi Gamma Delta - Alabama

http://college.usatoday.com/2015/10/...ed-for-hazing/

Five University of Alabama students, all members of the school’s Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, were arrested and jailed Wednesday on hazing charges, according to a university statement sent to USA TODAY College.

The arrests came following a “thorough joint investigation” by University of Alabama Police Department and the UA Office of Student Conduct, it said.
Those arrested were Colter Anderson of Dallas, Texas, and John Buckley of Houston, Texas (both 21), and Hunter Wagner of Huntsville, Ala., Richard Markwalter also of Huntsville, and Mark Powers, of Athens, Ala. (all 20).

According to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, all five were released from jail later that afternoon.

A report from AL.com says the fraternity brothers allegedly made pledges “stand in buckets of ice and salt, a combination which led to burns on the pledges’ feet.”

“The University of Alabama will not tolerate hazing and takes allegations and incidents of hazing very seriously,” Tim Hebson, dean of students, said in the statement. “Students who are the victims of, or who become aware of, hazing incidents are strongly encouraged to bring these incidents to our attention.”

Four of the students have each been charged with three counts of hazing — a class C misdemeanor — while Powers faces one. Their bond had been set at $1,000 each.

All five students have been referred to Alabama’s Office of Student Conduct. The university, alongside Phi Gamma Delta International Fraternity, has placed interim sanctions on the chapter, a campus spokesman confirmed. These interim sanctions include “no social events and no new member activities.”
