University of Maryland - Junior?

What I really want to know is do I even stand a chance? If so, any tips on how to market my age in a positive way?

I was at Maryland many moons ago, when formal recruitment was still in the fall. There tended to be quite a few upperclassmen during informal recruitment the opposite semester (friends of members joining). I think VioletPretty could give you current info, but you won't know unless you try!

Also, Maryland is open for extension, with 3 sororities presenting the first week of November. It's possible the newly chosen group will colonize this winter shortly after formal recruitment. Colonies look for upperclassmen to help balance the membership and take on leadership roles. Go to the open houses (great way to meet people, too), keep an open mind, try formal recuitment, and stay tuned for any announcements about an upcoming colonization, which could be a great opportunity for you.

I don't think that being a junior will be a major deterrent in your recruitment experience at Maryland. I would make sure to mention your 3 years remaining at MD. Best of luck! My stepsister went greek at Maryland and many other friends have as well. It's a great greek system!

We spoke via PM. For anyone else wondering about the same topic, a junior, particularly one who is staying for a 5th year, is not automatically doomed. I advised her to make her situation known to any friends she has in chapters, and to get recs to explain her situation. I say this because your time is precious at recruitment parties.

If you only have 5-10 minutes with a member, you can't spend all that time explaining a potential shortcoming--get that out of the way first with a rec or personal networking prior--spend your time showing the chapter members why you'd love to join!
