A friend of mine (I'll call her Susie - the names have been changed to protect the innocent ) told me her dumb reason for not going back to a particular sorority.

The way our first round of formal rush worked, you went to each sorority's rush room for 10 minutes ("tours"), then there were 2 open houses totaling around 8 hours, where you could go back to any sorority you wanted for as long as you wanted.

When Susie got to XYZ's room during tours, pretty much the first thing her rusher asked her was "So, do you have any questions about XYZ?" She was caught very off guard, and blurted out the first thing that came to mind: "Tell me about your nationals." Turns out her rusher had gone to convention that summer, and so she talked her ear off about how exciting convention was for the entire ten minutes!

While I'm sure it was exciting for the sister to go to convention, Susie just couldn't get that excited about a convention for a sorority she had literally just been exposed to during rush. She was very put off, didn't go back to XYZ during open houses, and wound up dropping out of rush altogether.

A former friend of mine from school thought that I was a threat to her relationship with her boyfriend even though I set the two of them up so she made him stop talking to me. Of course he still does, just not in her presence. We were both pledging during the same semester and would talk about that a lot and he started calling me his "Greek buddy" this made her jealous because she didn't want there to be something that he could discuss with me and not her so she told her friends that she wants to rush next year so that he won't have a reason to talk to me. (Isn't she a sweetie?) Of course after hearing that, we are definitely not going to giver her a bid for KLP.

There is a story that (without getting into detail) revolves around the Kappa house being haunted. A PNM cut us (even though she adored Kappa) because she was too scared to live in the house.

I know of girls who attended a house here and came out saying they were not going to go back if invited because they didn't like the way the house smelled.

Finally, one of my friends cut a house because they sang a sisterhood song on skit day. (Skit day is the second day of recruitment, sisterhood is not usually discussed until day four.) It freaked her out so she cut them.

Way back when, I think I *just* wanted to be an ABC because my favourite R.A. was one, so I just started hanging out with her and her ABC friends. They were nice, but I didn't really realize at the time that I probably would have fit in MUCH better with the XYZ's. In the end, I didn't join ABC, and when it was time for winter rush, I rushed XYZ, loved it, and got TOTALLY psyched to join, but they unfortunately cut me, because by then, I had become involved in too many other on-campus activities, and the girls didn't think I could make the commitment. It's okay, I'm still super friends with a lot of the XYZ girls, in fact, when one of my really good friends got a bid to XYZ this year, I hugged her and congratulated her, because that's what friends do, and she made it really clear that, XYZ or not, she'd still be my friend. So far, she's been as good as her word, and it's kind of a good thing, because, like I said, I've always been friends with the lovely ladies of XYZ (and some in ABC too, actually), and I'm just glad that my friend has become so close with them too.

I remember when I went through recruitment, I was pretty much set on where I wanted to go.... so we were at the first round parties and they started chanting... freaked the heck out of me... Then they did it the next night... and at pref. But, I still got over it because I loved the sisters... and I have found the chanting is actually really fun, but you can tell during recruitment we scare half of the girls.

I don't know if all DG chapters do this, but the one at my school has big sisters take blank books and fill them with fun memories, poems, pictures, etc. and present them to their littles at initiation. I AM THE WORLD'S WORST ARTIST! I was banned from sign-making during my years as an active!! I took one look at that book, told her it was beautiful, which it was, and knew right then and there I was not going to be a DG. The thought of having to make one for my future little sis was not something I could deal with.
This is kinda off on a tangent, but two of the family lines at my chapter have a tradition of making banners for their lils with pigs and bears representing each member of the family line. I am so glad that I'm not in either of those family lines, cuz my poor lils would've ended up getting the ugliest banners. I would've not been able to stand cutting all those little bears or pigs out of felt. This is an example of what one of those banners looks like:

THe diversions editor on the paper here went through recruitment twice (once fresh, once this year). Both times she's had extenuating circumstances to where she didn't finish rush. We were having a discussion about being Greek, and she told me, "Tau Delta is the only house I'm afraid to go into...those cats all around are just too scary!". I cried because I was laughing so hard. I told her that it is tradition to give ugly cat gifts, and I do mean UGLY. I hope she's considering Off Quota next year...she'd be an awesome sister

When I first went through recruitment at the University of Louisville I have to admit that I cut a few groups for the dumbest reasons. I even went back to one house for the only reason that their colors were my favorite colors!

I just love this topic!! I have been laughing so hard at some of these stories that my sides hurt. Anyways, I guess I am also guilty of the stupid reasons as well. I remember when I went through rush there was one party that I went to that after they served you (just punch and light finger type foods) the rusher would take you to a sofa or chair and you would sit down, than the ruser would kneel down in front of you and hold your food out for you, kind of like a human coffee table, needless to say I did not eat much or go back.
Than when it came to listing your choices I was torn between two. They are both great organizations and had super girls. It finally came down to their badges and what can I say, I just adore the golden quill!! Plus, I can not imagine my life with out Alpha Xi Delta in it!!

I know people keep saying "my friend" this and "my friend" that, but . . .

My friend (who went to Alabama) was totally interested in XYZ sorority and knew that was the sorority that she wanted to belong too. She had gotten the recs and checked out the house the year before, and was totally ready to go through rush. . .

She ended up dropping that sorority, because it was the first house she went to on the first day of rush (coincidentally) and was scared to death when a ton of girls were screaming at the door. She said she didn’t know what was happening, and she changed her mind then and there. Of course she obviously realized that all of the sororities yelled at the doors, but she had already mentally cut that one, because of the bad experience. She was more prepared for the other houses and they didn’t "scare" her. She ended up getting in a great sorority at Alabama.

(I do hope I have her story correct, anyway, it was something close to that. I found it interesting because after she told me that I was ready for my rush which was the next week @ North Alabama)

I don't have a cool "cut for crazy reasons" story. I thought the 4 sororities at UNA all had great aspects. (one was a little "blonder" then the rest)

I know of one group that I would cut because I don't like their colors..I haven't seen a lot of items with them on them so I may have a distorted idea of what the actual colors are. f

I would also cut some b/c of their mascot/symbol. I need something I can find around town, lol.

After the first night of Rush, we were told that we could write down little notes about each sorority so we could remember them the next day when we had to cut some. One girl in my group couldn't remember how to write Gamma Phi Beta's letters, so she cut them!

Another girl cut Sigma Kappa because she thought that the Sigma looked like a "funny E"

still makes me laugh!

Hahaha! This makes me laugh because on our Alpha (new member) retreat, some of the older girls did a skit for us and we're calling themselves "I Ate A Pies" and the "80 Pound Thighs" as a joke! It was really funny! But, some of the new girls were really worried that people called us that on campus! of course no one really does, but i think some of those girls wouldn't have stuck it out if they thought that they would get called those names...

LOL... this topic is hilarious!

I rushed in Fall 2004, and I'm the first Greek in my family, so i had NO CLUE about what was going on, or how to decide which house to cut, or anything really.

I ended up cutting one house because it smelled funny, and another because the girl who was talking to me had bad breath and an annoying voice and she just kept STARING at me! I was totally creeped out by her!
