Greeks are everywhere. This 4th proved it more than ever, and resulted in some very nice conversation.
I was invited to spend the holiday with my boyfriend's family at their lake house at Lake Tahoe. We drove up yesterday and stayed over. We had to leave before the fireworks tonight....but met some remarkable and interesting people during our time there.
The owner of the house is an alum of my University and member of a fraternity that is still on our campus today. Along with various relatives, he also invited a few of his fraternity brothers. All were in their seventies, so they have been members of their fraternity for over fifty years! They were all very, very close and it was nice to meet them. They were proud of their chapter, and spoke very highly of it. These gentlemen are married to women whom they met at the University, became members of sororities during their collegiate years and whose chapters are still there today.
One woman is a Tri-Delt and the other is a Theta. Once they heard that I currently attend the University, they both went into a tizzy asking questions about how things are like at the school now, and just general chit chat. They asked if I was a member of any sororities, and I mentioned my community Beta Sigma Phi chapter and they were intrigued, as they noted that they knew of Beta (there are a LOT of Beta Sig chapters in this part of the State), but had never met a member.
I even found through our conversation that one of the women was a member of the forerunner organization to the Student Ambassadors back in the late
fifties. I didn't even KNOW that there WAS any history of students giving tours before 1984 and being part of the Ambassadors, it certainly made for some great history to know. She stated that back then, the organization was made up of women only, and not only was responsible for giving tours but also helped usher for Sports events, and were generally 'ambassadors' for the school. What a great thing to have met her!
Indeed....Greeks are everywhere. Even on the Fourth of July, when you least expect to meet a new face and even better....to discover what we have in common, despite the years and the differences.
