For some people, myself included, this was never just about "the N-word and the like". I disagree with the writer about the bigger picture(s) but I believe we can multitask enough to discuss the origins of Southern cuisine (not everyone cares) and the other things that writer was talking about.

That was mentioned on CNN this morning. Wendy Williams gets on my nerves sometimes but her show yesterday had some good points. Bill Burr on Conan O'Brien also had some good points. Paula Deen should have skipped the "I'm a sign of the times" and fake tears (as far as I am concerned) routine.

I really like Jesse Jackson but, while he and other well known people of the African diaspora have been the voice for the communities, they are not our leaders. LOL. Hiring Smith & Co. (Judy Smith is the inspiration for "Scandal"--the show I lost my Black Card over since I've never watched a full episode) and getting help from Rev. Jesse Jackson just remind me of "some of my bestfriends are Black...."

Paula Deen will not lose her entire empire. She will ultimately be fine. She will hopefully learn to breathe easy and stop being so amused with herself. None of this is just a result of her admitting to saying the N-word.

I see it more as "I'm not racist because my Blacks don't give me domestic help. I not only admit they know more than I do but then pay them good money to pull my ass out of the fire." Same sentiment but a little more ballsy.

Please, enough on Paula Deen. Alex Baldwin rampages again on tweeter and catches no heat!

While she grew up in the South, times have changed. How long ago did she actually mention the no no word?

Tom replaced UVA17? You all shouldn't have kicked UVA17 out.

From what I understand it was only a couple of years ago.

The bank robbery was in 1987.

I found a really interesting article on the subject. If you still feel after reading this that her off-handed use of an off-color (excusing the pun) word 20 years ago is the issue and are supporting her anyway, then you need to out yourself for what you really are.

That is an interested article. Thank you for sharing that! Some of that I did not even know.

Good article and interesting comments section. There are other news sources (and posts in this thread) that outlined the allegations beyond a racial slur. But, people wanted this to be about a racial slur said 30 years ago. Deen's supporters will be her supporters and they have every right. I do not believe in shaming people based of their support for certain things. To do so would encourage inauthenticity and acting. There is enough inauthenticity and acting in the world.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the lawsuit. If the allegations are true, THAT should be what to focus your support/non-support of Deen. I hope they are not, not because I care about Deen (I prefer the Lee Brothers and Southern Living for my southern cookbooks) , but because being treated like that would be HORRIBLE. Hope the truth becomes known and punishment falls where it should.

I really doubt UVA17 is Tom, and last I checked, UVA wasn't banned.

He/she may have decided against posting considering the thinly veiled threats to out him/her and ruin his/her rush prospects. I really gotta hand it to some here, threatening young people like that because you disagree with them on the internet. Classy.
