Fight involving fraternity members from ASU ( video )

http://xfinity.comcast.net/video/Fra...id=hero_sf_TIV

From the video, it reports that the incident happened at an apartment complex, as the GLOs do not have houses ( can someone confirm if ALL of the GLOs ( fraternities & sororities ) do not have housing? )

The sororities are housed in dorms on campus. Fraternities do not have on campus housing as President Crow had the row bulldozed last Spring. Many fraternities now rent or buy entire apartment complexes or hotels for centralized living.

If the school actually gave support to fraternities and did not remove their housing then problems like this would not happen. Earlier this year the city council blamed the school for allowing fraternities to party off campus and cause problems for residents.

What the news fails to mention is that the girl at the party came from her HS prom and her boyfriend (has tattoos in the video surveillance) came over and started harassing the brothers, so the DKEs restrained him, until he returned with his gang and they started to attack the DKEs.

Here's the security footage with 911 call. The audio and video are not synced correctly as the call actually started when the guys returned with bats and the shots fired.

I know a few people at ASU. There has always been issues with the school not supporting the fraternities, such as them taking down the row. It really is a shame cause it forces the fraternities at such a big school to cope. At a campus like ASU it's understandable for them to rent out apartment complexes in bulk. That can only cause problems for local residents.

Just to make it clear, Since it's spelled out in the linked video but not in the title of the thread, ASU = Arizona State, not Appalachian State.

This incident at ASU is not due to the presence/absence of housing and University support for the fraternities. We have had similar issues at the UofA in recent years (you can Google it); and we have on-campus housing for all the sororities and many fraternities as well as a supportive University and powerful alumni.

No, not exactly. It hasn't been an "always" situation. Please do some research. Because it's been something that a few people you know say, in the very recent past/current time, doesn't make it an "always this way". No no no no no.

Let's see: it's already hot as hell in Phoenix. It's the end of the semester. Here's another article that gives more information.

ASU's main campus is land-locked, smack dab in the middle of Tempe, in the highly populated Phoenix metroplex. There are a lot of factors behind what happened. Don't blame the University administration or no housing for what happened. The fact is that, given the combination of factors, this could happen anywhere.

I probably know just enough about this to be dangerous. I have been involved for a long time with Greek Life at ASU. The university wasn't always "un Greek" friendly. Since Michael Crow has come on board there has really been no support of the Greek system and/or housing. There are several different issues going on here. The biggest one is the noise factor that is coming from the fraternities who lost their on campus housing. This has forced them into residential neighborhoods. The social activities bother the surrounding neighbors and the Police are spending a ton of time trying to manage it. They did raze the 2 Greek Rows. One is empty and I believe will remain that way until a law suit is settled. The short story is that it was being developed for a Fraternity Village and would house Fraternities and Sororities and the University came in at the 11th hour and eminent domained the property for their use. There is way more to the story then that with a lot of blame being cast but that is it in a nut shell.

The fight that happened was started by non fraternity men. That could have happened whether or not the Fraternity was on campus or not.

The last thing going on is there are several proposals on the table to get all the Greeks together in one form or another. One has all groups being housed off campus in various style buildings. The other has only sororities together in one location. There is one Fraternity that has already purchased an old hotel for housing. We are in such a predicament here and while the sororities are housed in dorms recruitment is becoming a huge problem for us space wise. That is a whole other thread and topic.

Bottom line is Tempe Police are fed up and the surrounding neighborhoods are fed up and the Greeks have no where to go or live together.
