What's your opinion on national GLOs?

I'm from a "local" sorority (we're not out of CA..yet and sometimes as a MCGLO we get flak and looked down upon by national/"normal"/NPC/IFC orgs.
As a result, I don't always have the highest opinion of nationals. Whats your input on this?

[my favorite is when I got told I wasn't in a REAL sorority by someone in a NPC org...uuuh]
Does that happen to you too?
What do you do to prevent that, and we go to as many events as possible but being a small [12 person] chapter, it's hard to attend everything to get our name out, and we all wear letters as often as is comfortable for a school who doesn't always respect members of the Greek community.

As someone who was also a member of a local sorority, I frequently heard the same kinds of comments. It is unfortunate, but there will always be people who will say negative things about local GLOs. Are you working to grow your membership numbers? It may be better to recruit informally and outside of NPC recruitment, where larger chapter with bigger budgets may overshadow what your group has to offer. In the meantime, I would continue to participate in other groups philanthropy events while inviting them to participate in your own. You could also try a social event with a few other groups on campus, which might be more comfortable/less awkward than only having one another group if they strongly outnumber you.

You have to stay true to the reasons your organization started in the first place. Focus your energy on being an asset to your university, one that exceeds university expectations, and stays true to its mission. The unique thing about Locals is that each member has the opportunity to directly make a difference and shape the future of her sorority!!

When you focus your energy on just carrying out your organization's mission- and doing it well- is when people will stop and say "Those girls are awesome" and it won't matter that you are Local.

At the end of the day...All sororities were started for one reason or another but mostly because women got together with one common goal and a plan. Who is to say that your Local Sorority might not expand into 100's of chapters in the next 100 years just as those in the NPC did?

Hope that helped!
