Mysticcat you are a lawyer right? Could you tell me what does it mean when a lawyer's state bar lists them as suspended? Did they do something bad?

At least where I practice, it means that they can't practice law during the time of the suspension.

And I would say yes, as a general rule, it means that they did something they shouldn't have done.

Is that the exact language? There are generally 4 statuses available for a law license. Active, which means you're going to your CLE classes, paying dues, etc., inactive, which is what Barack Obama's license is since he doesn't intend to practice law in Illinois anytime soon, that's a voluntary status which means you no longer have to take CLE or pay dues. Suspended is something that happens involuntarily. It can be from not doing CLE or paying dues, or because of professional sanctions. Finally, you can be disbarred, which is permanently (or until further application) not allowed to practice law.

Suspended can also be the result of a deal -- lawyer agrees to suspension to forgo a hearing and the chance of disbarment. Kind of a plea deal.

In my experience at least, suspensions for CLE deficits and failure to pay bar dues are rare, because those things are easy to rectify. More often, a suspension is the result of a first time, serious ethics violation.

Lawyers can also receive censures, which are essentially warnings that don't affect licensure status.

Last night I got to watch our chapter perform a ritual welcoming 19 outstanding men into the fraternity as candidates for membership. I helped both financially and personally with the recruiting process and I have advised our active officers for several years now while assembling an advisory board of some of my closest and best friends to help do the job. On top of all of that, I was part of the founding of this chapter, so seeing our men taking such pride and ownership in something I helped get off the ground is extremely gratifying to me. Last night, there's not a place in the world I'd rather have been.

Kappa Alpha Order is an excellent organization made up of honorable men. You're a piss poor representation of them here, having been dishonest, having attempted to divulge other organizations' secrets, impersonating an attorney and finally flouncing. I respect KA too much to actually believe you're a member. Stay gone this time, ok?
