I know we always had work week and each day we had to bring everything you planned on wearing for each day. That way if we didnt match something could be done about it before we embarrassed ourselves!!

If you wore buff though, would you have to bring your underwear too!
Honest question, i mean I have seen people wearing white pants and a red thong underwear before!!!!

Our chapter wears red blazers on pref night, with black shirts and skirts and hose. we usually wear them at least once a week, like our jerseys. we almost never wear jeans with our blazers except on Bid Night. We usually wear black pants and a black or white top under them, or khakis with with white shirts. They look really classy, especially on Tuesday mornings when we go to chapel all together in our blazers. It looks really classy when we wear them to class, especially 8 and 9 oclock classes when everyones there in PJ's bc they just woke up and we're dressed nicely in our blazers. I have some pictures, actually alot of pictures, shared on shutterfly, i'll get that address and post it. You would think it would be hard to find 60 red blazers, but if you just look around they're really more common than you would think, and often times seniors pass them down.

ESL&LiEP,
Kristen

Our pref dresses are hunter green. They aren't that bad. All the other sororities at our school have white (I think). We have to have the same color green, so our chapter buys the material for us, and we have to have our dresses made. The catch is that no more than two people can have the same dress. They check patterns and everything!!

My chapter always wore black with pearl necklaces, which I thought looked really nice (even though we did joke around about looking like we were going to a funeral ). We would point out during the speeches that although the whole chapter was in black, everyone had picked a style to reflect their own personality, and that's how it was in AGD, etc. I always thought it was a nice way to point out our diversity. The chapter is now switching to red, and everyone was told that their dresses should be true red, not maroon or orangy or pinkish, and that they should be below the knee and fit properly so as to not look trashy. Hopefully, everyone will follow those instructions and keep things somewhat uniform. I'm interested to see how it's going to turn out; I'll let you guys know how it looks.

I have to say that I am not at all happy with the idea to switch over the pref dresses. As my chapter sister Holly said, black looks classy. You don't have a lot of girls looking bad w/black. Also, I have olive skin, there is NO WAY I can wear green, it would look worse than looking like we're going to a funeral. White is the same as initiation so then white isn't special anymore, not everyone looks good in red, buff or green. Personally it would be a little shocking to go into a room of girls in bright red dresses, the badges look better on black. Plus, think of it in terms of money, so you want all these girls to buy ANOTHER $100 dress that they'll wear 4 times in their lives?? I think girls have a lot more to worry about to pay bills, dues, etc... then to worry about a new dress. I know I couldn't afford to buy one. I understand the point of it, but I think that the cost of a lot of other things outweighs the change. Lets be honest, some girls can't match and they are gonna come busting in wearing god knows what that isn't gonna match at all, they're shoes are all gonna look different (some are black, some red) and it's gonna look like crap. I've done dress checks before and it doesn't matter what you do, there is gonna be ppl who still wear the wrong thing. I personally as a rushee would have been turned off if I saw a bunch of girls in weird colored dresses over black. We are supposed to show our classiness and the importance of pref, black does that just fine!!

Katey Alpha Gam, I’m sorry, but this just caught my attention:

White is the same as initiation so then white isn't special anymore…
In my personal opinion white *is* special for that very reason! What better way to show our potential new members that we respect them and think highly enough of them to make Preference a truly special occasion – second only to our Initiation into membership?

I think it’s time to be pro-active… instead of grumbling about the decision for Preference attire to reflect our Fraternity colors, let’s start discussing how we can best implement this in our chapters!

We’ve seen the beautiful pictures of red dresses in action, and some other ideas have come out of this conversation. Our wonderful Hawaii sisters have custom-made attire that all match, and it even reflects the Hawaiian culture – what a great idea! If we all use our resources to our advantage, this can be inexpensive at the same time. I’m sure there are several women who are talented seamstresses, or whose mothers, friends, relatives, etc. know how to sew.

The decision to not wear black was made by our Fraternity leaders for a reason – as it was stated, this was done based on research done throughout the country! Yes, we have every right to have our own opinions, but the fact of the matter is that we are to wear red, buff, green, or white for Preference. This new ‘policy’ was introduced several years ago and it’s not doing us any good to stomp our feet and say we think black looks better… instead of talking about what we cannot do (or don’t want to do), let’s talk about what we can do! That’s the spirit of Alpha Gamma Delta I know and love!

And as for wearing this dress only a few times throughout college? Why can’t it be worn for a formal? I’m sure many collegiate women attend fraternity formals, chapter formals, etc. In my chapter there were countless opportunities to wear a nice dress. Not to mention non-sorority times to wear formals… new year’s parties, formal holiday parties, etc. A good formal dress can be used multiple times!

Okay, so I’m probably rambling, but I felt the need to get this out… it’s disheartening to see all of the comments complaining about this. Let’s use it to our advantage! Yes, if I walked into a room full of women with frowns on their faces who are complaining about having to wear red/buff/green/white, I wouldn’t be impressed! But if I walked into a room full of women who are smiling, cheerful, bright, and eager to talk to me and tell me about their sisterhood, I couldn’t care less what they’re wearing. And if there are a few sisters in your chapter who don’t have the best skills when it comes to fashion, offer to go shopping with her – encourage her, and show her what styles you think look good on her. That's sisterhood. Don’t just complain about it… do something about it.

Some ideas...

So, on the note of doing something about it, David’s Bridal was mentioned – they have a ton of options for any color! And it’s not all that expensive – in fact, if you worked with them I’m sure they’d offer a substantial discount for such a large order! They have various styles, colors, body types, sizes (2-26!), etc. And most of the dresses can be ordered quickly and for less than $100. Any of these would look *great*! In combinations of red, buff and green; or all members in one particular color!

And if you pass these dresses down, then in a few years it won't be an issue that no one has the right color, size, or style! Look at it as an investment in your chapter's future!

Our preference dresses were always black, and with the dim lighting and candles we use, it did look a little like a funeral. Anyway, we're going for red dresses this year. I've seen pictures, and they do look really nice, even if they all aren't the same shade of red.

Pref Dresses

Well, our Pref dresses are spruce green. We have a certain pattern and material we have to use so that all the dresses are identical. The fun part is making them

We wear red dresses as well and they look spiffy! Although I do agree that black is classy, but hey all i care about is sitting infront of that girl an hearing her say "i want to be an alpha gam". I know that Tri delt wears black, Phi mu wears white, and chi o wears either red or black, i can't remember. But no matter what we wear, Alpha Gams shine like a star--cause we're the best!
