Obviously not a real option for your daughter, but the Pandigital readers are Android-based (2.x also), and they can be rooted - if it's the latest hard/firmware, this makes them faster and basically turns it into an Android tablet.

It's literally 80% of an iPad's functionality at 15% of the price, although it does take fairly significant tech know-how. It also allows you to install both the Kindle and Nook software from the Android marketplace - so you get the functionality of both.

Odd little aside, but with stores blowing them out for as low as $60 (and with them readily available on the Bay for under a hundred), I thought it might be worth mentioning.

To get back to the thread: with Android 3 tablets on the horizon, the answer to this question might soon be "neither, and cheaper" so if you don't want one this minute, holding out could be a boon. Both get rave reviews, though, so I'd definitely try both out in-store and go with what suits your fancy there.

Got a Kindle for Christmas and love it. My only complaint is that publishers are crazy with the price of the digital copies of books. I can kind of understand new releases, but when I can order a used copy of the book for $3.00 (with free 2-day shipping thanks to Amazon Prime) as opposed to the Kindle copy for $9.99, I've gotta stick with the paper. There are a lot of free books out there- most of the "classics" and a lot of other stuff. You have to weed through the junk, though.

Totally happy with my Nook, I'd like a tablet at some point, but not until they become a lot more functional and a lot less like a big version of my Droid.

You can hack the Nook (color at least) to be a tablet. I've been itching to do it to the one I got for Xmas but I want to wait til after the Droid update comes out this month.

Aren't the color ones just like looking at yet another computer screen? My eyes can only take so much of that in a day. My daughter wanted the e-Ink of a black & white and I do too. I'd be getting it to read only.

I've yet to have any sort of eyestrain reading my nook, plus since I read in very dark places, it was the only choice for me.

Nook, not Nook Color. Same problem I described above applies, I don't want a tablet that functions like a larger version of my Droid. Don't know why I'd want my ebook reader to be a larger version of my Droid either.

Yes, I haven't had eye strain from reading on my Droid myself, but I wanted an ebook reader, not a tablet for that reason.

Y'all are still young I get eye strain just reading email on my Droid...lol. And between work & school? Probably 16-17 hours a day staring at a computer screen some days. The e-Ink seems calmer somehow.. don't know how else to describe it.

Android 3 should essentially solve these problems - it's actually not intended for phone functionality at all.

We have both a Kindle and an iPad and I'm obsessed with both of them, but I can only handle reading on the Kindle. My husband reads on the iPad and it doesn't bother him, but he doesn't tear through a book every few days like I do.

Well, when I say 'bigger version of my phone' I'm talking about things like memory, processor speed, and software capabilities as well. At this point since I have a laptop (that can handle WoW and Word etc) a Nook for reading and a smartphone I don't feel like I have the need for a tablet. Something's going to have to sell me on the WHY. I still don't have a separate MP3 player now that I have my phone because I don't see the point.

The geek in me likes gadgets for gadgets own sake, but the person trying to pay off her student loans needs more.

Neither. There's just something about cracking the binding on a new paperback that just makes me SOOOO happy. Plus trying to actually READ on any sort of computer-type screen really gives me a headache

^^ You need to check out the e-Ink screens they're designed specifically to mimic a real page. They're not backlit so they don't cause eye strain. You actually need a light to read them.

Doesn't replace cracking open a new book, but the ability to carry around hundreds of books makes up for that for me.
