On the question of recs. The result is to exclude PNMs who are first in family college students, particularly if they are from a blue-collar background and live in the wrong part of town, whether that is the intention or not. My SEC school has 17 sororities and if you don’t have a rec it is an automatic first round cut. If you are a legacy it is fairly easy to get a rec for every chapter. Everybody writes one for everybody else. If you are first in family it can be a big problem. My HS best friend had to scramble to get recs even though she had top HS grades, sports, activities and ACTs. Some alums, particularly in the top tier chapters, told her they wouldn’t write her one because they didn’t know her personally and rebuffed her when she said would send them a resume and meet with them. Some asked intrusive questions about her family background and the job her father had only to make excuses why they wouldn’t write her one. She eventually did get one for every chapter but only after considerable effort on her part.

Recs

My daughter just pledged at Alabama. First generation pledge, in fact we knew nothing about the whole process. She started getting recs late, but had no problem with that at all. It's amazing how I knew someone who knew someone who was happy to write a rec for someone they had never met. LOL - what's the point - seriously? Because my daughter went in with no expectations, (and also recs from only about 6 houses), she actually had a very easy time of the process (compared to some who I hear are ready to leave the school because they didn't get the sorority of their choice - get real!!!!). She is very happy where she ended up, and I'm pleased for her, but this process was intense!!!!!!

Not sure where you live but it's not that way with our alum panhel. Heck we have even been known to help get recs for non-local girls who find our website and mail us all their "stuff" per our requirements and if we get it by our deadline, we handle their rec requests just like everyone else who is local, and these recs are even written by alums from "top-tier chapters" (all of us, that is!)

Didn't Richard Todd marry one of those twin Tri Delt cheerleaders from the late seventies? I may be getting my football heroes mixed up.

I don't think it's so much the fact that things are done differently in the south that sticks in some people's craws. Anyone should understand that with that many girls, you have to cut a LOT and cut fast so rush doesn't turn into an out of control clusterbuck. I think it's things like seeing "recs are suggested but not required, it is the chapter's responsibility" and clothing that is far more casual than what women actually wear on the websites. Then again, the South hardly has a corner on that sort of thing. A lot of it IMO is just a misguided attempt by national Panhel to "de-frill" these very frilly, very traditional recruitments. All I can say is GIVE IT UP!! Nathan Lane will be banging Pamela Anderson in a dive bar in Omaha before that happens. Just be honest and put the info out there so first generation Greeks know what to do.

You have hit the nail on the head, 33girl. All National Panhell has accomplished is to make the process seem more unfair to the women unaccustomed to the process. For the women who grew up in the state of Alabama is makes perfect sense. To women coming from Maryland, for instance where for many schools recs are non-existent, the process would be very confusing...especially if you went by the panhellenic website!

I'm so intrigued by this "rec stuff," so I just checked on our recs for recruitment, which starts in two weeks. We have under 10, and 5 are for legacies. One gal is a legacy at 4 different chapters on campus! Interestingly, all the recs we received are from women who are initiates from Southern schools. Most of them live in the midwest now, but to a person, they are alumnae of Southern chapters.

Okay...be prepared for this stupid question: Who? I'm from the North and not as well versed in football, so excuse me for not knowing who those men are. If you don't mind me asking....Who are they? I'm sure they are great but, I just don't know who they are. Sorry....

Gosh! Blasphemy to us! No, seriously, I wouldn't expect you to know 3 of the 4 but am surprised that you didn't know, or couldn't deduce, that "Coach Saban" is the head football coach. The other 3 are former outstanding players...two of whom played in the NFL....

Don't worry, als463... I know nothing about football so I had to Google it!

Whenever someone asks me for a rec, I always ask if they need ones for other groups on campus. I round them up if I can. We're all in this together and I always want the young woman to have every opportunity to be Greek.
