Families

Hi Everyone!

What "family" were you in at your chapter? Does your school have family names, traditions, special letters, etc?

Please share!

I was (am) a member of the "DIVA" family from my chapter. We were the largest and at one point, 7 of the positions on Executive Council were held by DIVA's.

Others that I recall off the top of my head were the MGM family and the FOXY family. There were more but I don't remember them all.

In my chapter, families do have names, although, IMO, with few exceptions, they are stupid and don't last because they are stupid. As in, a family will name themselves based off of a characteristic that 2-3 people share and then god forbid someone takes a little that doesn't fit. Some families also have undesirable characteristics as their name, or names that are really generic and could describe anyone. Examples include princess, rebel, cheater, Jersey (as in NJ), dot, redneck. A lot of these families still retain their names but they don't apply to the youngest members like they did to the members that came up with the names.

When I got my big, we went out to dinner with my grandbig, aunt and cousin. We wanted family letters and tried to think of a name but we could not agree on anything. I gave up.

My last semester as a collegian (my little's too), my grandlittle was lobbying hard for a name and she wanted to be the Chipotle family. Do we all like Chipotle? Yes. Does it make us unique? No. We are the Chiptole family I guess, but I don't really think it's a good name. Our branch is kind of dead because my great grandlittle withdrew and my great great grandlittle declared herself part of another family (knife in my heart).

I think DG at my campus names their families by the oldest common "matriach" (using her maiden name). Makes more sense, because it doesn't change and is classic. If it were up to me, this is how I would like to see families named.

I believe ZTA at my campus names their families with animal names (ladybug, monkey, tiger, penguin). Much better than what my chapter does. At least it sticks.

I am in the Frog family. Other families in my chapter (when I was there - may have changed) include Turtle, Shoe, and Martini (they could never use their paddles for show during recruitment).

We all have greek names (mine is Gamma Phi Lambda, others are Sigma Beta Chi Phi Beta Chi, Lambda Beta Phi, Delta Alpha Tau..) and each greek name has a secret meaning that only the family members know.

The UW chapter does it the same way.

Very cool! I may have to make this suggestion. Except, what happens if/when a little gets a new big in another family? Like if her big withdraws or there is a falling out?

The family names in my chapter get a little out of hand...
There's the Tiger fam (recently changed from something a little more scandalous), the BAMF Pham, the VIP fam, Ohana, Coach fam, a couple other little ones, and then mine- Hooters fam!
My GGBig named it because nearly everyone in it has big boobs, and well, she's inappropriate like that. We all have tanktops that have the hooters logo, but with 'sigma kappa' in english instead, with the owl's eyes in the double p. (We never wear the tanks out of the house lol)

We have the Ruby, Opal, Pearl, Otter, Princess, Amethyst, Crow, Peridot, Emerald, Aquamarine, & BA

The original ones were the precious stones. I think the others came out of adoptions/drops/transfers/etc.

All are still there, plus I'm in the Margarita family (too bad, my paddle was Kick but!! 60+ hours of hand painting!) There's Flamingo, Fierce, Diamond, and a few little ones that are starting off branches of the big ones
