Proposed Change to Expansion Requirements
I encountered a problem while founding a colony at Marietta College. I recruited the 15 required members and obtained the signature of the Director of Student Activities and Greek Life. However, I could not get the signature of the chair of the Music Department. He is a Sinfonian himself but he stated he does not want the organization on his campus.
This situation raised the question of why one would need the signature of the "head of the music unit". I understand on larger campuses that a music department chairperson might have more control over their department but at a tiny campus like ours, it doesn't make sense.
Our interest group was not at all affiliated with the music department. We would not be so when we were chartered either. We would be on equal footing with the other national social fraternities on campus as well as belonging to the IFC.
My guess is that this requirement is left over from when we were a professional fraternity. Most likely it has never been changed because a situation like mine has never arisen.
What do y'all think? Is this something that we should try to get changed at the 2012 convention?
