Writer's Block

I have writer's block...bad.

I also have a Statement of Purpose and a Statement of Research/Inquiry due for my doctoral app...not to mention the essays due after break.

Any suggestions for overcoming writer's block?

Sometimes, what works for me is to just start writing. Even if its off topic, then bend some nonsenical fiction that I've been writing, into the subject.

I once saw Kurt Vonnegut speak, and his suggestion to writing a book, was to write it, then throw away the first three pages.

I don't know if any of this will help, but it beats staring at a computer screen.

Whenever I have writers block I take a shower and read one random chapter from my favorite book. It's so refreshing!

I'm bumping this...

I'm applying for a graduate certificate program which they require a statement of purpose.

The certificate is for Community College Instruction. I'm hoping that after completing this to enter an Adult Higher Education masters program.

I am so stuck on what to include in my statement of purpose.

Any recommendations on sources or websites with examples?

Is it bad to advise you to just write a bunch of B.S. that makes you sound like Mother Theresa? I mean, do these people actually care what you put in the personal statement? Or do they just generally care that it sounds like you're generally a good person?

It sounds like they want to know if you are a good match for their program.

I feel like sometimes those statements are mainly to see if you are a good writer, and if you communicate well, and the substance isn't quite as important.

I think, like Kevin said, they're also expecting you to boast about yourself. So, make yourself out to be a Mother Theresa; emphasize every favorable aspect about yourself.
