Marissa's hands were tied. NPC regulations state that if a woman is invited back to preference night, she MUST appear somewhere on that chapter's bid list. Even if it is dead last.
AFAIK there is NO way to get out of this situation. Unless maybe a PNM murdered someone in the house on preference night or something. Which clearly didn't happen. LOL.

I am in NPHC, so yes, I'm sure I'm misunderstanding the situation from an NPC rules/rush standpoint.
Thanks for the explanation. So pref night, more or less, is like a 99.99% yes from the actives side, but still elusive from the PNM side. Its like your bid list before pref night would be a list of PNMs to vote yes on, and then after pref night, it's a matter of reordering the deck from "absolutely positively YES" to "meh, she's OK, well welcome Polly PNM if she shows up."
This is my interpretation as an outsider, and i understand if i've asked too much.

Let's say quota is 40 and PNMs may attend a max of 3 pref parties. If super-awesome PNM is so super-awesome that all 3 chapters rank her in their top 40, she gets a bid to the chapter that SHE ranked #1. In this scenario she could not match to 2 or 3.
She would only match to chapter 2 or 3 if she was not in the top 40 of #1 AND #1 matched 40 before getting to her name on the list.
OR
if all 3 chapters reached 40 before getting to her name and she was placed in #1 as a quota addition.

Right, and only the 3 (or at some schools, 2) chapters that she attends for preference night will place this PNM on their lists at all. If she regretted/did not attend a group, they will not put her on their list.
She could, however, still possibly get a snap bid from a group whose preference she did not attend - but only if she was not matched at any of the houses that she attended at preference and ranked on her list.

Sorry to anyone checking in because I've bumped the thread. I have a question that I really should know the answer to, but I don't.
If she signed her card after preference then isn't the bid she got from Marissa binding for a year? I've come across some threads lately that state that someone had until the end of the day or something to decide whether or not to accept their bid.
I've never heard of this before. Isn't that the whole point of signing your card right after Pref? You're pre-accepting.
So, unless there was a computer error, wouldn't aprocess be bound to Marissa?
Sorry for the confusion...it's been too many decades since I went through Rush.

By signing a preference card, you pre-accept the fact that you will be bound to the chapter where you match for a year. Particularly at campuses where Rho Gammas "force" PNMs to rank all of their preference chapters and don't make this fact clear, a chapter may match quota, but far fewer could actually show up at bid day. This happens all the time to my friend's chapter at another school. Again, regardless of whether those PNMs "accepted" or not, they are bound for a year.
It sucks for the chapters too, because they think they have more NMs than they really do. Some College Panhellenics think that forcing PNMs to rank all of their choices no matter what helps a Greek system, but it doesn't do the chapters or PNMs any favors. If you wouldn't accept a bid from a chapter, don't rank it.

Weeellll, the other side of the coin is that if their HQ is on their tail about low numbers/not being at total, these girls can be included. They are considered "holdovers." Or that's how it used to work in dinosaur days, anyway.
