I am extremely annoyed that the two Chinese gymnasts, who had extremely visible balance checks and issues with their routines, had fewer deductions than Shawn Johnson who had a much tougher routine and less problems. At least they scored Nastia appropriately.

I was too. I really hope they investigate that whole Chinese gymnast not being of age to compete rumor that has been going around. I understand everyone develops differently, but those girls aren't any older than 12 or 13. Some of the reporters were saying that the younger you are the lest fear you have of doing risky routines or being hurt, which I believe is true.

YAY USA women's gymnastics!! 1 & 2!!!

That little Shawn Johnson is a fireplug, isn't she? (and I agree, she was ROBBED on the balance beam)

That was SO exciting!!! Wow. Much as I love watching Michael Phelps, seeing those two get gold and silver was definitely the best olympic moment for me so far.

Nastia is adorable. I felt so happy for her when she started crying when they officially announced her as the gold medalist. Her dad looks so happy!!

I admit it. I cried when they played the anthem. I cried too when her dad hugged her and he had tears in his eyes.

I just cried too. I was, however, bothered by the quotes from the dad that there was only one color medal that was acceptable and they'd been training her whole life for gold. I realize having a gold medalist gymnast for a dad makes life different, but this didn't sound much better than the Chinese sports system to my ears...

I *am* glad our gymnasts don't look anorexic.

As for KSig's post about Mary Carillo... I'm sick of all of these kinds of things being done during prime time while they ignore every sport except swimming, gymnastics and beach volleyball. Would beach volleyball get as much coverage if the outfits they wore had more coverage?

Did anyone else catch when they announced that she would be going to SMU this fall? Interesting. Paging srmom....

If she decides to rush (SMU is deferred) I guess Kerri Strug can write her Theta rec!

Yeah, I noticed that too!! I'd write her a pi phi rec!!! I hope she goes through rush, that would be great! I don't think she'd have any problems considering she's georgeous, intelligent, poised, a leader, I'd say she's pretty strong on extra curriculars

Maybe we can get her to write a recruitment story

I can see it now:

"Hi I am new to GC, but thought I would post my recruitment story. I am a little nervous for recruitment because neither of my parents were Greek.

Here is a little about me: I was home schooled, didn't have much time for volunteer work, but I did manage to win a gold medal in the Olympics. My school has 8 chapters, but if you know which one, don't tell... I am trying to be discrete."

In all seriousness though, good for her. She sacrificed her youth to follow her dream and perhaps she is just looking to be a "normal" 18 year old now. I wish her the best at SMU, and hope that daddy's expectations can "simma down" a bit.

EARLY this morning (I have a puppy which is worse than having a baby - crying all night), I watched the tennis match with Blake and a guy from Chile (I think Fernandez but can't remember). Anyway, in the last set, Blake was up 9 games to 8 and the Chilean was serving, score tied at 15 all. So, Blake hits this ball, the Chile guy is at the net, and the ball deflects OFF HIS RAQUET out of bounds. So, the referee calls it out.

Blake argues that the Chile guy's raquet hit the ball - it was clear on tv and the commentators were all saying it happened. Well, the referee just sits there and does nothing. The Chile guy is down at the end of the court with his back to the discussion (CHEATER, CHEATER PUMPKIN EATER!!!!) not saying anything.

Well, you'd hope Karma would come back and bite him in the butt, but NO, Blake, visibly shaken ends up losing not only that game, but is then broken and loses the match.

The commentator was shocked and made the comment that tennis is supposed to be a gentleman's game and the Chile guy KNOWS that he lost that point and should have said something, that that's the way it used to be done.

SHAME on him. Now, Blake is a big boy, and should have been able to refocus, but still, I just think that is such bad sportsmanship, and in the Olympics, you'd hope that people would act in a sportsmanlike manner.

Winning at the expense of integrity is just bad

I remember reading an article (that I just can't seem to find right now) that Nastia Liukin was teased in elementary school because of her name. "Nasty" was what all the little brats called her.

Shawn Johnson is a great athlete, no doubt about it, but IMHO she lacks the grace that Nastia had. One announcer mentioned that she has her dad's athleticism and her mom's grace and beauty, and she was really a delight to watch.

And her poor mother -- she couldn't even WATCH! No helicoptering there!
