Univ. of MD Greek Shop
I'm an Alpha Phi at WVU and home in Maryland for my Thanksgiving break. I was planning on going to College Park this week to get some Alpha Phi stuff for my little. I wanted her to have some things from a different Greek store that a lot of the other girls won't have. Anyway, I visited a friend at Maryland last year and I'm pretty sure I saw a Greek shop, but it was at night and I didn't get to stop in. I think Alpha Phi is one of the smaller sororities at UMD, so I'm not sure if they'd have a lot of stuff there. I'm about an hour away and don't feel like making the drive just for one or two Alpha Phi things that I could probably get at my own school's Greek shop. Has anyone been in the College Park Greek Shop and want to offer an opinion on if I should bother driving down there to check it out?

I am an alumnae of UMD (graduated in the 80s) and know there were several greek stores. One on Route 1 near where the bars/restaurants are and one was on the side street ( forget what road) across from the Maryland book exchange.
Back when I was there Alpha Phi was a very good sorority so I bet the stores still have tons of Alpha Phi stuff.
Hope I'm not sending you on a wild goose chase but I think it's worth the trip. UMD is a great campus.

Thank you so much! I didn't know there was more than one Greek store, now I'll have something else to look for. I figured if I get lost, I'll run the risk of looking like a dork and stopping someone wearing letters to ask where the stores are.

I think GWU also has an Alpha Phi chapter. You might want to check that out, too, for their Greek store, etc.

I went to a Greek shop when I was visiting in 2001, and I remember seeing tons of items that weren't at the Greek store at my school. I bought a lot. I don't remember where it is though.
Try checking out the house while you're there. I don't know if anyone will be there, but when I visited the area the ladies were very nice and let me and my friends take a tour of their house! And the whole Greek area is so nice, almost all the houses are made of brick, very pretty.

i go to UMD and the greek store has stuff for every sorority (even the ones not on campus) and just about the same about of stuff for every group. if you are looking for something specific, you could always call and ask. if you need directions to college park, let me know!
oh, if you look it up, the official name is the "university shop" or something like that.

Ditto this post. They had a lot of stuff there when I visited. It is called the University Shop officially, and it's right on Route 1, like everyone said.

Thanks everybody for the location of the place so I'm not driving around aimlessly for a good hour. All it takes for me is one wrong turn and I somehow wind up in the middle of nowhere. Hopefully they have a lot of cute Alpha Phi stuff!
I visited a friend at College Park last year and stopped by the Alpha Phi house. I was only in there a few minutes because it was their finals week, so a lot of the girls were at the library and the ones still in the house were studying. Maybe I'll give it another shot tomorrow.
adpiucf, thanks for the GWU recommendation. I might swing by there considering I have nothing else to do on my Thanksgiving break!

Do you know why they blocked off the paddle section? I had to write all the letters down and ask the girl to get them all for me.

not sure, they do it randomly sometimes, my guess is for inventory... but they also may have done that because they have a bad theft problem :/

The guy told me it was because of the bad theft problem. although when I went, since no one else was in the store, he let a few of the initiated sisters go behind the line and get the stuff for us. But, he was also the only one working that day because it was during UMD spring break.

That's a shame. The letters aren't even that expensive! (although they do add up)

They do that at one of our campus bookstores too, only it is the ENTIRE Greek section. You have to ask one of the employees to ungate the area if you want to shop around, and even then an employee sits there and watches you until you're done. I really hate shopping there, but it is really the only option for Greek merchandise.
