Summer beach house rental
So I've been talking to some of my newly employed friends and sisters, and we were thinking of renting a house in the Hamptons or at the Jersey Shore NEXT summer. I've never done anything like this before so I am welcoming any advice anyone has in this area in terms of cost, realtors, pros/cons, how many people to involve, etc., etc., etc. I'd like to do it for the entire summer season. Thank ya!

Just call me Miss Jersey Shore!!
I've managed to live down the shore for the last 4 years, despite being dirt poor. Depending on what area you are looking for, I can help.
My one piece of advice is to make sure that you have DEPENDABLE people, preferably those who can pay upfront or that you really really trust. The first summer, 2 of us were stuck picking up the tab for the other 2 people who backed out. It sucked big time. Also, make sure that EVERYONE signs the lease. That way you don't get stuck with the first problem.
Let me know any questions you might have, I'll be more than happy to help

Thanks DolphinChica I am planning to do this with sisters/friends so I am hoping to avoid problems that way. I know someone who went in on a rental once with random strangers and it was a big mess (I wonder why?! LOL). Anyways, we would definately consider the Jersey Shore because it is just as close for us as the Hamptons. Feel free to PM me with any ideas/info you have. Thanks

Just bumping this because I am considering the same thing for my 30th birthday in 2009.
Thoughts? Suggestions? More leaning toward the south (Carolinas) but would also consider the Hamptons or Jersey Shore.

We've been going to HHI since the mid-70s but are going to try Sea Island, GA this summer. It's supposed to be fabulous.
My Manhatten cousins opt for the Hamptons for the summer shares. A fascinating book about that area is Philistines at the Hedgerow : Passion and Property in the Hamptons by Steven S. Gaines / Published 1998

I love the outer banks of North Carolina, especially Corolla and Duck. We've used the same rental company two summers in a row now; the houses have been impeccable, and the service excellent. I cannot wait until our trip this summer.

I spent one of the best weeks of my life this past summer at Rodanthe. The house was great, the Outer Banks were wonderful, and I am ready to move there year round!
