I have to say - this is a case of you get what you pay for. If you join D Phi E, it will be a lifetime experience. You will always have sisters no matter where you go, and you will have a national HQ that has developed programming for you and your chapter that will enable you to develop your leadership skills. They also have high standards, including NO HAZING. I know money can be a concern - but if you can swing it, I'd encourage you to give it a shot.
And not only will you have your DPE sisters - you may find, as I did, that even if you don't have a chapter near you, you can be active in alumnae panhellenic and meet wonderful NPC women from other GLOs.
Why not see about attending the next D Phi E rush event and look them over?
No matter what you decide, hope you are able to be active in your college campus. Good luck!

It needed to be said! Your sorority dues are the best investment you will make in college. What you gain through it is second only to the education you receive.

Speaking of copycats of NPCs, for anyone interested, there is "Zeta Epsilon Tau Alpha" at the University of Rhode Island. Their colors are silver and teal, they support breast cancer research, they go by "Zeta". The link.

I wasn't trying to imply that it was okay, just giving the little background info I knew. Strangely enough, my chapter was a local before becoming Alpha Phi at URI. They were Kappa Delta Theta. I wonder which group they wanted to go with? haha Two groups only presented, and either was Kappa Alpha Theta. Granted, the local had their own symbols etc, but still a little weird. Maybe it's just a URI thing. I joined after we became a colony, so I don't know too much about what the founders were thinking.

If they didn't rip off every symbol of Kappa Alpha Theta, maybe that's not what they were thinking (that they wanted to be KATs).
I know you said you joined after the group became a colony so you wouldn't know for sure, but really, there are only so many greek letter combinations.
There was a local interest group on my first campus whose name was Delta Lambda. They had their own colors/mascot/symbols etc, and none of them were even remotely close to Delta Gamma. Someone might say "They are DG posers because their name is two greek letters and the first one is Delta!!!" but really, they picked letters that worked for them, and their own symbols and they did have interest in joining an NPC, but they didn't single out one...they waited for the campus to open up for expansion and looked at the three that presented.
It's one thing if the names are sort of similar minus one letter but they have their own symbols/mascot/etc; but quite another when the letters are extremely close, and the colors are the same, the mascot & symbols and even philanthropies are the same.

Yup, I agree. There are only so many Greek letters. I assumed Alpha Sigma at UW-W was the remnants of our chapter that was once there (their colors were the same as ours) until I was informed that it was a local that had actually been around LONGER than ASA had.
And then there was the group of (extremely white) guys in the 1950 Clarion yearbook who founded a local fraternity called Alpha Phi Alpha.

There's a local at Brooklyn College called Alpha Sigma that wanted to become a chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau so they used the same colors, etc. as AST. AST did not want to colonize them.

Yup. And because of this they have said they will never go national and talk bad about all nationals.

The older collegiate sisters who were in KDT said that the local got chose their letters after seeing Theta's on a house in Boston or somewhere like that, but they remembered wrong. I think they really liked Theta but knew a bit more about how expansion worked and understood they had to make a group that fit them.

Ok...so this is getting WAY out of hand. I am a member of Kappa Gamma Sorority at SCSU, and I simply cannot believe that this matter is still being discussed here. Are we serious, ladies? Don't you "real" Kappas and Zetas and Deephers have something better to be doing (such as sticking to the morals you preach, like philanthropy & community service) than sitting on your computers and researching a small state school like Southern and its Greek Life?! Really now.
To set the record straight, we were NOT founded by a transfer student. A legitamate KKG who went to UConn happened to be best friends with an SCSU student who wanted to start an organization. So the material that we had (yes, past tense) came from a creeper of a KKG, not a theiving KG. We never approached KKG to affiliate because we had no interest. We have our local pride, and weren't interested in being a NPC group. We've since changed our badge and symbols, so we have no connection whatsoever with KKG.
And the poster SCSUgirl who got ya'll so riled up is full of shit. She wasn't trying to rush us. We aren't even HAVING A RUSH this spring. My guess would be that she's already part of an organization at SCSU and is trying to slander us. It's okay to be jealous, honey, but this is a bit much
Any further questions as to the legitamacy of our organization can be directed to our President at kappagamma1213@yahoo.com

Oh, judging by the tone of your post obviously everyone here is waaaayyyy off the mark. You do a fine job of representing your little ol group. It may be that the wrong impression has been given to the community at large about your group given their early thieving (i before e except after c) of the symbols, colours and even name of Kappa Kappa Gamma. If some 7 or 8 years later you have changed, well, about time.
And yes, the REAL sorority women here ( both local and NPC) have lots to do - including calling a spade a spade, and a copycat org a copycat org. Are you still calling yourself Kappa Gamma, or Kappas? 'Nuff said.
eta - and if you had let this sleeping dog lie, the thread would probably have died.
