Texas 22nd and the Republican Party

The Republican Party is the grand old party of the United States. It is the younger of the two major U.S. political parties, and the second oldest active political party in the United States. The other party of the United States is the Democratic Party. Both the parties differ in ideologies and in their standpoint on various issues confronting the country. Republicans are considered conservative while Democrats are labeled as liberal. Republican Party is the oldest political party in the United States and arguably the oldest party in the world. Today, the Republican Party supports a conservative platform, with further foundations in economic liberalism and social conservatism

The current U.S. President, George W. Bush, is the 18th Republican to hold office. Republicans currently fill a minority of seats in both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, hold a minority of state governorships, and control a minority of state legislatures. It is currently the second largest party with 55 million registered members, encompassing roughly one third of the electorate.

There are many races which known for their Republican stronghold. Texas 22 nd Congressional District being one of them. This district saw the passing of power to the hands of Democrats in the previous election, after a republican rule of 20 years. The 22nd had long been considered a solidly Republican district, with a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+15. A Democratic presidential candidate had not carried the district since Lyndon B. Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater in the 1964 election. This constituency is known to have played a major role in voting George W. Bush over John Kerry by a 2 to 1 (66%-33%) margin, more than any other district that fell to the Democrats in 2006.

There are many known names standing for election in this constituency. This includes former Sugar Land mayor Dean Hrbacek, former Pasadena mayor John Manlove, former John Cornyn Chief of Staff Pete Olson, Family District Judge Jim Squier, State Representative Bob Talton, and NASA contractor Ryan Rowley.
