Legacy

I am just wondering, a friend of mine was considering joining a fraternity based on what he called "Legacy". From what I could gather it was something about being related to someone already in the frat...Could anybidy shed some light on what legacy really is and what its implications are?

It depends on which fraternity your friend would like to pursue.

For some organizations, a "Legacy" is a person seeking membership who is directly related to a member. (Usually parent-child or siblings, but it varies on the organization.) There may or may not be special policies regarding how legacy aspirants are considered. It depends on the organizations.

For other organizations, a "Legacy" is defined as a MEMBER who is directly related to another member.

Since you are posting this in the Alpha Phi Alpha section.... there are no policies on giving relatives of Alphas any special consideration in membership selection. In fact, I am pretty sure that "legacy" as a term in this context doesn't exist in our official documents.

Good luck to you and your friend. In the future, I suggest that you ask these questions of members you have a rapport with in person.

In DST a legacy is a prospective member who is the daughter, sister, or mother of a soror. She may or may not become a member, since we have no legacy mandates of membership.

My sister and I were my mother's legacies. My daughter is mine. But none of us were guaranteed membership because of it.
