my 2 cents
im sure you know this, but i thought i would mention it. consider your short and long term professional/personal goals when considering where you want to live. that may help you narrow down the variety of choices you have.
not from houston, but my college roommate has spent almost a decade down there and loves it. it sounds like it is progressive for your professionals, but it is what you make of it. she and i are both northerners..lol, but each time i talked with her, she had so many great stories about the social scene.
i live in suburban md and since it is close to dc, it provides a great opportunity to connect with alot of progressive folks. so much to do! it is a good place to settle, but expensive as hell and the commute is the worst. housing is also really high, but if you are commanding a great salary you will have no problem. personally, i find a number of us are working to pay bills because the housing is so expensive, so again, consider that in the equation. but in my area, i have found a place where i can plant some roots which is nice.

I've even considered moving abroad, but I'm not sure if I'm quite ready to do that, considering the state of international affairs these days.
So, here's where my wonderful GC family comes in. I'm looking for some recommendations as to where I should consider moving. I am open to just about any place, but I would like to live somewhere that would afford me a good blend of cultural experiences, ability to mingle with a collection of young, professional, upwardly mobile African-Americans, low to moderate crime (I know that no place is perfect, but I can't live in the murder capital either), affordable housing, and an all-around good quality of life.
So, if you live somewhere, have lived somewhere, or just know a lot about a particular place and can offer me some advice, hook me up! It would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have a co-worker who lives in Richmond and works here; that's a 2 hour commute. Each way. People in the DC metro area do it a lot, mostly due to housing costs. But with gas prices being what they are, I'm not sure how long that will continue for the average worker.

not one single testimony for the great city of NY?
well that's understandable. the nightlife is very 21+ (and 23+, then 25+, sigh), expensive ALL the way around, the dating scene - garbage (everyone's dated everyone). and no one is from here anymore - everyone is a transplant from either Smalltown USA or another metropolis (DC/Atlanta/LA/Chicago/Seattle).
the AA community - where? we're around, but then again we're not. its hard to explain. my educated AA circle are NPHC, and were not as deep as some other cities.
plus raising kids here, while i am a product of it, would not recommend it, not even in the "suburbs" of the outer boroughs.
so, where does a Noo Yawker relocate when she knows nothing comes close, even through all its flaws? I know there's some sacrifices, but i leave NY for more than 2-3 days and i start to get the shakes.

To the Sorors in Houston:
I will be moving there in July to attend TSU for an MBA w/ conc. in Health Services Admin. I will be visiting next week primarily searching for somewhere to live. I'm still in the "broke student" range. Are there any suggestions? I plan to have a GA position and a job...

Soror: Congrats! I just moved to a two bedroom apartment right around the corner (literally) from TSU. There are a lot of duplexes in the area. I stayed in a four-plex during law school and I'm staying a duplex right now. Feel free to PM me.
