Sweethearts
(I posted this in the general Greek Life forum, but then I found out that we had our own. Maybe I could get better answers here.)
I'm a TKE Sweetheart at my university. It's a relatively small university; TKE is one of three social fraternities on campus. None of our Sweethearts, so far, have come from sororities; it's not a 'little sister' type thing here, nor a girlfriend or wife thing. I'm neither a 'mascot' or a 'groupie' and I definitely don't bake them cupcakes every week -- I don't have that much time and probably wouldn't if I did. Haha. (I say these things because I saw them suggested in other threads!)
I was made Sweetheart in 2001, when our chapter chartered; since then, I have seen a big difference in just how much these new, younger brothers know about what a Sweetheart is. (And how much respect they show!) Half of them don't even know whether or not a Sweetheart comes to meetings, which is pretty ridiculous.
Now, I have my own views on what a Sweetheart is, should represent, etc. -- but I'm kind of curious to hear other people's. What do we mean to YOU?

In a nutshell, a sweetheart is a woman who supports the fraternity and someone the brothers are proud to count as a friend, both on a personal and chapter level.

I guess I'll post the same thing I posted before. We got rid of our sweethearts on our campus, because they were sluts. We also don't allow sweethearts to sororities in our fraternity either, at least not on our campus.
I don't like sweethearts. Why would someone want to be a servant to a fraternity/sorority other than to screw the members? Join something real, and worth joining. saruhsto I'm not saying that this applies to you, I'm just speaking of my school.

Uhm, please read my reply to your post in the other thread.
Your idea of what a "sweetheart" is is not the case here. I suggest you actually read some of the posts before you post assumptions.
Lastly, sweethearts don't "join" anything. They are selected by the members and it's considered a great honor.

Are you really a TKE?!
Sweethearts definitely don't 'join' anything, at least not here. I really had no intention of being a part of anything Greek; I turned down two sororities my freshman and sophomore year. I was chosen by the guys my freshman year, and it was a surprise. I didn't even know what a Sweetheart WAS. Haha. I was chosen because I was friends with quite a few of the guys, and always attended their events. I didn't get drunk and make a fool of myself at their parties, I wasn't making out in the corner -- I would watch out for the guys who were, at the time, just my friends to make sure they made it home safe.
Trust me, if it was a servant thing, I would have run in the other direction loooong ago.

Uhm, I did read your reply. My opinion is still the same.

Sweethearts at Delta Epsilon
At Cleveland State (Delta-Epsilon) our sweethearts are elected by the Membership Quality Board along with the chapter awards (such as Top Athlete, Top Big Brother, etc.) The sweetheart is always a female who has made a _SIGNIFICANT_ contribution to advancing the interests of our chapter and of Tau Kappa Epsilon, and someone that (had they been male) would be proud and honored to call our brother. Every past sweetheart gets the respect of always being sweetheart of the chapter, and is always welcome to all social functions. They are NOT allowed to attend private ceremonies or chapter meetings, however. They do NOT have a vote in any decisions that are made by the chapter, as they are not actually members.
They also have the privilege of being embarrassed by TKE's occasionally and randomly breaking into a rousing rendition of "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" which has somehow (unknown to me as to when) became the ONE song that TKE Delta Epsilon is known for on campus (and has been for at least 5 years - probably many more before that).

NPHC "sweetheart" is a different entity than what these threads are about.

You just brought back a great memory for me. Sunday morning brunch, at the cafeteria, 13 pledges on one knee... it really did make me blush. This was at my first school in 1990, and not the school where I became a Gamma Sig.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Question for TKEs --
Have you ever made a Sweetheart buy her own letters?

Congrats on becoming a Sweetheart!
I'm also a Sweetheart, but not a chapter one, they quit that along a while ago

Sweethearts
I am a TKE sweetheart at my school, although they call it something else. Here, it's a very selective thing. The senior boys have meetings for weeks to decide who gets chosen, and only junior and senior girls are eligible. Even then, hardly any juniors are chosen, so being chosen as a junior as I was is a really big honor. Girls are chosen based upon the "if they were a boy, we'd give them a bid" theory already mentioned above, and girls who have slept around in the house are disqualified. I have been dating a TKE for three and a half years, so I know all the guys, and being a sweetheart is a mark of my friendship with them. I play beirut with them (and win), help at their philanthropy events, play mario cart, and watch out for the pledges if they ever need someone to talk to. I am a respected part of the house, and if any younger guys ever talk shit to me, they get ripped a new one by the older boys. So Pretty Boy, if you think that sweethearts are just sluts, then obviously the problem is with the boys in your chapter and the fact that a) they are not respectful of women and b) they choose sluts instead of friends.
