ALBANY -- The Rev. Rose Stuart spends her days gathering food and school supplies for children, opening her church, the New Covenant Christian Fellowship, for them and acting as their advocate.
She says she's just fulfilling a promise she made a long time ago.
"I was born poor and raised poor and I promised the good Lord that if I had the opportunity to help others I would," Stuart said.
Stuart, who co-pastors New Covenant with her husband Donald, was honored by the local chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority Saturday for her work in the community.
The sorority hosted its annual Finer Womanhood luncheon at the Crowne Plaza Hotel as a culmination of a month-long celebration of the same name. Along with Stuart, University at Albany senior Dara Yusuf was also honored.
Yusuf, a 22-year-old Syracuse native, will graduate with a double major in political science and Africana studies in May and has applied to Teach for America, a national organization that commits recent college graduates of all academic majors to two years of teaching in urban and rural public schools. She's the president of the university's NAACP chapter, mentors with Big Brothers and Big Sisters and interns at the New York State Assembly.
She said it felt great that the extra effort she gives is noticed.
