I DVR'd it. I've yet to watch it, but I would rather have seen Studio 60...

Can I ask, where did the term "Guinea" come from when referring to Italians, particularly in the Boston/NY setting? Because I'd never heard that one before and then first The Departed, now this. I've heard wop for Italian and mick for Irish, but what about guinea?
ETA:
Ok, nm did my own homework... from wikipedia:
Quote:
Guinea is a highly offensive ethnic slur for someone of Italian descent in the United States.

It derives from "Guinea Negro", which came from the popular belief that Italians were part African because of their often darker skin, and possibly from the belief that the Moors once dominated parts of Italy.
Continuing down my learning journey:
Quote:
Guinea is a traditional name for the region of Africa that lies along the Gulf of Guinea. It stretches north through the forested, tropical, regions and ends at the Sahel.

Yay, I'm glad you liked it. It's probably just because you're Irish though.

Someone at my law school who is not my friend anymore told me she tried watching it but she doesn't like "ethnic" shows.

Amen, I refuse to watch any more NBC. Every time my favorite show is on NBC it gets cancelled.

*potential spoiler issues, retards*

I just watched this yesterday - I d/led it off iTunes . . . pretty solid, although the concept is a direct rip on every mafia story ever ("if you kill the boss, you'd better be prepared to be the boss"). It was somewhat predictable, but the cinematography was way above par. It didn't really leave a lot of room to grow, but I was impressed.

Lyrelyre ...clever name by the way, symbol and nickname...anyway, I know...and then the ones who leave...and you never watched...wished you had when they were on and a hit....I never got into Will and Grace after the first season....now, damn, wish I had...so I ignore NBC's new shows for that same reason...expect them to break my heart ....fyi..there is a huge on line petition to save Studio 60...so there is a slim chance!!

sorry to break the sacred double reply rule...but checked the Death Watch site which tracks the shows due to be cancelled....and according to them, BLACK DONNELLEYS is 7th on their list...and has a 52:1 chance of cancellation so do something fast if you like or love this show!!

This show is not bad. I might catch the next episode, if time permits.

But what happened to Studio 60???

It's on hiatus right now, but it's back on the chopping block and may be cancelled. BD pulled decent numbers, so who knows what NBC execs are going to do. We're told we can expect to see S60 back, but that it may not stay for long. Go and sign the petition to save it here: http://studio60.bluestatedigital.com/page/petition/main

NBC is starting to - one of my friends actually watched Black Donnellys online last night. They don't have The Office yet though.
