ATHENS — University of Georgia administrators on Wednesday dealt their toughest blow yet to the party atmosphere on campus, approving a policy that would suspend from UGA any underage student caught drinking or doing drugs a second time.
Officials said the action, taken two weeks before the end of the spring semester, is intended to send a message to students and parents that underage and excessive drinking on campus and in the college community will not be tolerated.
DETAILS OF UGA POLICY
• UGA will notify parents after the first and every subsequent violation.
• Students in violation for the first time will be assigned to an alcohol awareness class and placed on probation for the current semester and the next two semesters.
• Students in violation while on probation will be suspended for the current semester and next semester.
"The university must heighten its expectation of student behavior," vice president for student affairs Rodney Bennett said.
Under the new policy, UGA's Office of Judicial Programs will notify parents of students accused of violating campus alcohol and drug policies the first time and every subsequent time a violation occurs. Students found guilty of violations through the university judicial process will be required to take an alcohol awareness course and will be placed on probation for the remainder of the current semester and the following two semesters.
- Students in violation while on probation will be suspended for the current semester and next semester.
