Ummmm.... Len doesn't sell MK. At least judging from his posts... though i'm not sure, they're a little hard to read.
It's living on because it's an interesting discussion.

'Tis true. I always wondered why my friends/sorority sisters who sold Mary Kay either a) didn't stick with it for very long, or b) didn't make any money, but this thread has shed a little light on both those questions.

So yesterday when I was lost in Dallas, I drove past the Mary Kay headquarters.
I didn't know whether to wave or stick my tongue out at it.

Okay...okay
Lets set the record straight:
To start a Mary Kay business you need 100.00 plus shipping (8.00) and sales tax on 100.00 here in MA it would be 5%. You get everything you need to do 30 + faces with over 300.00 in full retail size product. You make that back with your first facial. The price for the starter kit has stayed the same for years now (over 10 I think, but don't want to state something I am not sure of). A very small investment to see if it is right for you. And if it is not, you can keep the 300 dollars worth of product for yourself or sell it to friends and make a profit on it... whatever!
2nd: To become active, you place a 200.00 whol sale order (400.00 retail - where You make 200.00 after selling it). Your profit, everyone's profit is 50%. An even playing field. I think you have 3 or 4 months to do this, and if you don't, then you become inactive. When you want to reactivate, you pay like a 10.00 fee. To remain active, the absolute minimum you have to purchase is $200.00 wholesale in a year to remain active, again that is 400.00 retail. Sell your product for 400.00 that you purchased for 200.00. With this, you receive a magazine every month with encouragement, new product info and what not. There are unit meetings everywhere but you are not required to go, you have no boss, and can get all the info you need on-line or through the monthly magazine. Your recruiter is not your boss, your director is not your boss. This is your business... you can buy the product and give it away or sell it to your friends at wholesale price or just use it for yourself and get the discount. No rules on that.
3rd: We don't sell in stores for a few reasons. Mary Kay Ash built the company on personal contact. We teach and share and offer personalized service. This is an in-home product. Also, if we sold in stores, it would raise the price drastically as it would if we advertised.
4th: You don't have to recruit, it depends on where you want to go and what you want to make. It is not a pyramid scheme. If I recruite someone, and she sells 400.00 in one month, the company then sends me a percentage of that sale. It does not come out of the consultants earnings.
You can make this company whatever you want and do whatever you want. Become a consultant for personal use and get products at wholesale, have a class a week an make 50-100 per hour, recruit and make more and earn the use of 1 of 3 of the cars Mary Kay has to offer. If you want to go far and fast up the ladder, there are always peers and directors who will hold your hand and take you there. It is really ... ALL ABOUT YOU!

Oh... one more thing...
like Annnyy JOB or anything in life for that matter, "You get out of it, what you put into it." So many people quit after a week and say.. "aww... it didn't work." as their starter kit sat in it's box. I think no... You didn't work. I have to say though that it isn't for everyone.. some people might try it and find that it is not for them... But they were sharp enough to get all the info and give it their best... and now they know and can move onto something else. I applaud them!

You forgot Option "C", which is the "freeway finger salute".

What are the tax benefits, exactly? Are they different from normal business expense deductions?

You could write that stuff off if it was related to any business. The "tax benefits" are not specific to your company.

To answer your question: freelancing, such as writing or editing -- not saying this would be appropriate work for you, but it fits your description.
Tell me how Agel is not a pyramid scheme. Here is the description of "how it works" from the website you have in your signature:
How would you like an Income Building System that does 95% of the work for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
A system that not only does the selling and the training of your new members for you, but also starts putting associates into your business before you even contact them.
In fact, every person who signs up from this MyGelFusion website “after you” will be placed directly below the last person who signed up. So if you signed up today, everyone who signed up after you would be placed directly in your organization!.
Why are we putting people in your business anyways?
We actually make more money by helping you succeed! This gives us a strong incentive to do everything we can to help you make money. Anyone of these people we are placing in your business can represent $1,000's in residual income to you and your family for years to come.
You have the opportunity to leap ahead of everyone who visits this site after you if you take action and sign up before them.
And of course, if you do not want to risk losing any potential associates or members, you will need to sign up immediately.
Can you imagine how many people we will be able to place in your business in one month...6 months...1 year from now??

You're not starting a business. You're taking part in an already established business
