question on a gift

Hey guys,
I have a friend that is being intitated into a local Fraternity this weekend. and I want to get him something, but I am at a loss. It is so much easier to get presents for my girl friends that join a greek group, since I know what is acceptable for sorority presents even if they aren't in my sorority.
Does anyone have suggustions... he is joining a really small Fraternity so there isn't anything at the university book store.
Thanks for your help!!

Letters are always appropriate. Greek 101 (i know, expensive) makes shirts of non-national groups...just specify the letters. What do guys in this group usually do that distinguishes them? Example : girls here buy their friends in other groups mascots (owls, deer, pink panthers, cats, scottie dogs). The guys usually give eachother things like beer glasses (yeah yeah i know) or some of their symbols (gave a friend of mine a crown I made out of wire in class). Perhaps something like a scarf of their colors?

I don't know there rules about wearing letters... but I image that once he is intitated they can wear letters... I don't know if he would though... I'll ask before I buy them... for some reason the guys at our campus don't wear letters very often... it's mainly the girls... guys are all about the party shirts. But since I am in graduate school maybe I just don't come in to contact with the younger people any more.
I also don't want to spend gobs of money (cause I am running low on cash).

If he dresses up with cufflinks often enough, go for it!

I think that's an incredibly thoughtful, classy gift that he'll have for a long time, and maybe use for a long time as opposed to the beer mug that his future wife may decide belongs with that beat up recliner from his first apartment when it hits the curb.
