Lightbulb computers

For those of you that don't know, I live in California. Unless you have been living under a stone then you know that we have a major power crisis. Anyway, the power is OUT right now, and I am not happy. It's like 8:30, and I woke up to it going out when my cordless phone beeped at me.... So I'm sitting here, with nothing to do (no power) and I realize it's way to early for my summer ritual of floating in my pool for a few hours so I can soak up some sun.... Back to the point. I realized that I don't need the electricity to be on to go online, I have a laptop!!

So my question to all of you is what kind of computer do you have?

I have a Dell Instiron 4000 Notebook- Thanks mom and dad!!!

I have a sony vaio notebook - it's one of the mid-height thinline ones, it's like 1.5" thick and sort of a blue-purple color. So that's nice - and it has digital audio/video outs, so i can jack it into the stereo and rock out. (*rocking out*) Yes! yes! yes! Keep on Rocking - No! no! no! Don't stop the rock . . .

I just have a regular PC i think...Intel Celeron Processor to be exact...it's pretty good.

anyway about the power crisis thingey, i don't think it hit san francisco, since all my clocks are working and such...but my phone is all wacked out! there is no dial tone!! i hope there isn't an emergency or anything cuz i wouldn't know what to do...anyway, isn't scary that the power crisis is supposed to get WORSE this summer? it's already bad as it is! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr..

Cool

I'm running a PIII 500 mHz processor, 96 mb, RAM, 15 gig HD, voodoo3 video card.

Hey, it was awesome 2 years ago

Actually, my computer works just fine for me right now. I'm going to upgrade some things soon, but for now, I don't see the need for a gigahertz processor. Not yet, at least

Ok, I have a crappy Gateway I just got it last year. It has 733 Mhz, 120MB and some other stuff I can't remember (sorry, I'm just not a hardware person ) and it's ok except for the fact that it gets errors here and there (very annoying! ) or it'll freeze up(even more annoying ). My friend said it's Win98...it has bugs. Well I don't know...anyone else w/ Win98 have this sorta prob?? I want a laptop. Can anyone recommend a good one for a fairly good price? Thanks!

I have a Dell Latitude something or other. My college requires laptops so that's the only reason my parents were willing to buy me one. That sucks that you guys don't have power. Guess i have been living under a rock cuz I didn't know that! And I have relatives living in CA...

I have an Acer Extensa. I got it my freshman year. Rose requires laptops, and you have to buy it through them. They pick one every year. The company they bought from the first two years, bankrupt, the third year, TI Extensa. They sold it to Acer, and that was my computer. Now they have the Acer Travelmate the last 2 years. I'm not sure what they'll have next year, but it will probably suck!

My parents have a new Dell desktop, just got it in the spring. I can't remember the model, but it's a 933 MHz.

My computer at work is a crappy Gateway2000 P120, but at least it's got 48MB of RAM

If I had the cash I'd give my system a shot in the arm with upgrades.

I bought this nearly two years ago. It was built for performance: mp3s, movies, etc. and everything I bought was the all around best value at the time. p550, 128 megs, 20 gigs, tnt2 video, 4 pt. surround cambrige speakers w/120 sub, optiquest 17", 4 speed DVD and 4,4,16 yamaha burner.

as far as windows - i spent a summer working in as a compusa business sales rep, so i learned a lot of this stuff ... there are bugs in everything, but windows is pretty solid. It's better than any of the other options for most people; one thing is that you should back up files, and format/reload every once in a while. Stuff gets cluttered and causes problems like you mention.

Laptops - same deal as before, i sold them by the dozen to corporations. Best brands? Sonys are great, very solid, look good, high-line performance, good support. Can be sort of expensive, but the price is dropping, they're very light too. Also, Sager makes great laptops. Gateway and Dell are in the same class as Sony and Sager too probably - it just depends. Gateway and Dell are more expensive, but fully customizably (as far as laptops go), Sony is more limited in choice but not performance, Sager is cheap and makes great stuff but smaller company (= less service etc).

Stay the hell away from Compaq, HP, Fujitsu, and basically any other big-name brand; they have higher dead-on-arrival rates, and have a terrible reputation (HP's bad rep is only in this catagory).

IBM and Toshiba are decent; they'd be in the middle, b/w the other two catagories. I'd go w/ the other ones listed above.

Zchi4 Life,

My sister has a Dell laptop, and she loves it...says it's real reliable and fast...

She also had a Toshiba one before, and no problems there...

Good luck!!

P.S. Yeah, I have windows too...it's usually OK, but I've experienced the bugs, too.

KSig RC, I read your post about laptops while looking to buy one myself and all things considered went with a new sager. For the price of what a more "name brand" ie dell, would cost, I got the best sager they had, and I gotta say other than it's short battery life it's a good machine. I would reccomend them, unless of course mine breaks anytime soon.

Thanks,
JD
