I'm curious to hear from Chemical Engineers (and interested non-Chemical Engineers) on the topic of career options and the
variety (or perhaps, lack thereof) of careers where a Chemical Engineering background can be applied.
Of all the engineering studies, it could be argued that Chemical Engineering is the most valued in the job market. With the highest starting salaries compared to all other engineering graduates, it's clear that corporate America values the capabilities of a Chem E.
I've spent the last 8 years consulting for just that kind of organization. Nearly 40% of our staff members are Chemical Engineers... and here's the kicker... none of them have engineering jobs! I consult for a third party Marketing & Sales organization that partners with major chemical manufacturers and sells specialty and fine chemicals. We're on the cutting edge of technology, fully internet-enabled, and breaking down a lot of barriers that exist in the chemical industry regarding "how things have always been done." Over the years, it has amazed me how seamlessly our Chem E's have gone from Process Engineers to savvy marketing & sales people that rival most business school graduates. Maybe the reason this has amazed me is due to the sheer number of Chem E's we speak to, just to find the small handful that have the tenacity, instinct and most importantly, the desire to make such a transition.
I'm looking for a few good men and women... Chemical Engineers that want to work for an entrepreneurial organization that values technically minded people that are comfortable taking risks and that want to be involved in the
building of a business. Our search for talent is more challenging today than it has ever been. Where are those Chem E's? Where should we look? Do they exist?
