RENO, Nevada (Reuters) - U.S. millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett, who made record-breaking solo flights by plane and balloon, has disappeared over the Nevada desert after taking off in a small plane to scout sites for an attempt to set a world land speed record, authorities said on Tuesday.

RENO, Nevada (Reuters) - The search for U.S. adventurer Steve Fossett, missing in the rugged Nevada desert for five days, was expanded again on Friday, but authorities said they were suspending night flights.
Capt. April Conway, spokeswoman for the Nevada Air National Guard, told reporters the air search had been extended to 17,000 sq miles from 10,000 sq miles (26,000 sq km).

MINDEN, Nev. - In their quest to find missing aviator Steve Fossett, searchers have come across uncharted plane crashes six times. But none of the wrecks shed light on what may have happened to the multimillionaire.
Hopes that a wrecked plane spotted on the side of a hill might be Fossett's were dashed quickly Friday when ground crews learned the plane last was registered more than three decades ago.
