Official LXA fez?

I dropped by HQ earlier this morning and had a cup of coffee with Mark B and Tim R. We wandered into the new library and were looking at some old photos and discovered a shot taken in or around 1914 which showed Cole, Mason, and others wearing a FEZ with a cross and crescent insignia.

I've never seen the official Lambda Chi Alpha fez before. Any history fans out there have any information on such an item?

I believe it is mentioned in What & Why along with the Fraternity Hat Band and Fraternity Whistle.

I don't have a copy of Ritual How and Why

I wish that I could get hold of one. I know that many of the questions that I think of from time to time would be answered therein.

HQ does NOT have an example of the fez. It would be a real coup to snag one someplace.

Let's see, if I could find the original '09 handwritten constitution by Cole, and if I could find Cole's gravesite . . . . .

Back when I was High Kappa, I suggested that my chapter bring back the Fez's. I've prob seent the same pic as you and that's where I got the idea from. I'd rock the fez and I know many other's would too. But here's one thing I didn't notice until a borther pointed it out to me. If you look real close, none of the brother's look happy in the pic. I heard that they didn't want to wear the fez's but it also could be cause of other things...who knows.

Heh... the Fez...

One of the Brothers at the Toronto Zeta was pretty much obsessed with it after seeing it in an old C&C and "Pledge Manual" from 1928 - he even went out and got himself one made

It was also his favourite question to ask CLCs about it just to stump them...

The Latest Paedagogus and the Fez

Brothers,

I few years ago I saw the photograph that Brother John mentioned in his e-mail in a display case at IHQ. I was immediately drawn to the unhappy, Fez wearing Brothers in the photograph!

There is something odd, yet attractive, about a Fez! It brings to my mind North Africa, The French Foreign Legion, and Lawrence of Arabia, but not Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity!

The Fez style hat is still popular in some parts of the modern world and can be found for sale through an internet search. Finding one in green is problematic! I don't believe that the letters and tassle would be hard to make or find. So the prospect of a Lambda Chi Fez is close at hand.

To my knowledge the Lambda Chi Fez is still "Official" and could be worn without violating our Statuatory Code. However, I find it hard to believe that somebody would really want to wear it! OK, at a private gathering...but in public? I wonder.... can you imagine a troop of Lambda Chis strolling along the campus sidewalks wearing their Fezes?

About two years ago a Sigma Delta Tau Fez was auctioned on eBay! I wanted it but got "sniped" at the last second.

In a September, '06 C&C article about First Day Covers a comment was made about the popularity of these head devices among fraternal groups back in the 1920s and '30s. The Shriners still wear theirs!

Other Brothers must like them too. The most recent issue of the Paedagogus has the photograph John mentoned on page 101. None of the Brothers seem to be real happy about wearing the Fez and some are pictured just holding them in their hands. Cole is pictured in his Fez. I wonder if he had anything to say to them after the picture was taken....

The Fez, The Fez, Where Oh Where Is The Fez?

Yours in ZAX,

Mike Raymond, Z-U

A "Fez" may not be bad if it had a bill on it!

I too chortled at that picture and tried to figure out if they were mad or sad for wearing a "Fez" for th picture!

Hmm... A new Staff / GHZ designator

Gee, like, could we get some and make the staff wear 'em?

Maybe the GHZ?

I can see it now - Dr. Ed Leonard sporting the new LXA fez!!

A jeweled badge for said fez?

I've seen belly dancers - you'd be amazed where jewels were placed!!

In keeping with the middle eastern thought, perhaps a jewel for his navel? For John Holloway's navel?

Quick - tell Mark Bauer - we can sell tickets to watch!!

That is the open rituals book. Ritual How & Why is a 69 page book at about 3.5 megs of space. Goes into the TKN ritual and into the history of ours as well. I'll send it along if you drop me a line with your e-mail.

Lightbulb About your fez.....

I know this thread is a little older but I ran across it and couldn't help repsonding.

If you can't tell by my user name I am a Mason and also am a Shriner (I have fez, yes and I wear it in public very proudly.) I was also Greek. TKE Xi Iota Chapter UCF. Lots of LXA friends though.

If you really want a fez, I suggest going to either lafsco.com or hiramhunter.com

They are both fraternal supply sites that sell fezzes. I am sure they can take of you since they make custom Shriner fezzes.

Good luck and if any of you are interested ion Masonry, let me know....

I found one of the original items on EBay and it now resides at our HQ in Indianapolis.
