How are we brother and sister? Though I love a PMA to death!!

I have always wondered why SAI and PMA are seen as Greek siblings. I contacted Nationals once on doing a project of our history together, and I was told (bluntly) that PMA is a separate org and sometimes they run their chapters too much like socials and we dont want to ruin our good name!
I also know that a PMA brother founded Mu Phi Epsolon (Sp).
Any thoughts?

NH is correct, Phi Mu Alpha and SAI are not "sibling" organizations. On many campuses the two chapters have formed a close bond due to their mutual interest in music, and the fact that one is exclusively male and the other exclusively female. That's it.

It is always fun to act like "sibling"orgs.... till one side does something wrong/embarassing then there is no affiliation!

Run Chapters too much Like Socials

Interesting - What exactly do you mean by "Run their chapters too much like socials"?

Regards,

Long time no hear, Boodleboy! Hope you're well.

BTW, you did notice that the post you quoted is 2 years old, and that the poster hasn't been on GC in two years? I wouldn't hold my breath for an answer from her.

Good to hear from you too brother Mystic Cat! Life is ok and I will try doing a better job of getting on GC more often. I guess I was hoping that someone would pick up where it left off.

lol well i guess we are slacking. although im not the original poster, id be glad to kinda explain what i think she might have meant.

at our school PMA is an acutal social ifc fraternity, so they are technically social. they still say that they are professional, but havent done a musicale or service project in awhile. i know this isnt what its like at all schools, a chapter about 30 min. from us, is pretty much strictly professional and ive been to several of their events. even some sai chapters are more social then professional, although i havent heard of any being panhelanic. our chapter is more social than others i know of, we are considered to be the "ghetto" chapter, lol, no we just like to have fun.

personally, i consider PMA to be my brothers. we both have the common bond of the love and passion for music. between a lot of us being music majors/minors and being in marching/concert band, choir, etc. we have tons of classes together and spend alot of our free time together. lol. so why not? the bond between PMA and SAI as chapters at a whole at our school is not good, old bad blood, but has been past down in generations. but individually, they are some of my best friends AND my boyfriend is a sinfonian. i love our sinfonians! :-)

Thanks for the insight, ReddestRose. It's interesting, although I find the phrase I quoted perhaps the most interesting of all, since Phi Mu Alpha hasn't been a professional fraternity for a few decades.

It's true, PMA IS a social organization. Half the brother's discovered that this year after they'd been in for a year or longer too. haha. We consider them our brothers at my school, but that's because almost every greek has a brother/sister connection w/ someone, so they just kind of fell into ours.
I know that our chapter has had a lot of issues trying to not act like PMA and do some of the things they do, b/c our MITs and their PM's become so close.
