meet the parents

So I'm meeting track-boy's parents monday when they have their memorial day pool party. Not only am I meeting his mom and dad, i'm also meeting the extended family too (his whole family on his mom's side all go away to Deep Creek every year, there is like 25 of them who go, and all these people will be at the event)

So my question is this,

do i bring something to the picnic?

I was thinking of bringing a cookie cake, or some other dessert type thing.

thanks for the imput?

I would, even if they say that something is unnecessary, I was always taught that guests don't show up empty-handed and it would probably make a good impression on his family if you brought something. It doesn't have to be anything big or elaborate, you don't wanna look like you're trying too hard. Just a platter of cookies or a box of candy or something like that.

yes, bring something! With that many people, they're sure to need food. Call his mom and ask what you can bring (actually, probably should have done this a big earlier). Worst comes the worst, bring a bottle of wine or something (if you've over 21). If not, make a good dessert.

Definately bring something-if his mom says that you don't need to bring a dish or anything, a nice bunch of flowers is always a good option.

Funny story about meeting the extended family-I had been dating Mr.RN about 6 or 7 months when his older brother got married. All during the rehersal dinner, and even at the reception the next day, all the family members I met ( the extended ones) asked us, will we be doing this again soon?? Are you guys next?? I knew he was going to freak out and after the wedding I was never going to see him again . Now we've been married almost 3 years.

I second the bottle of wine - as long as you know that his family drinks.

I brought back a bottle of wine from France for my ex's family.
It's probably still in their fridge. (<--Did I mention it was RED wine?? )

Haha... that makes me think of that nasty wine in a box that so many college girls drink. And chilled red wine? Yuck!

what's a good "meet the parents"/housewarming/"thank you" present if you're meeting them as they're picking you up from the airport, and you're staying at their house a few days? because you can't really bring food, and flowers or the like wouldn't work either....

Take them out to dinner or get a gift certificate for a restaurant in their area. Or, pick up something while you're there.

Send a message via AIM to Lady Pi Phi
I've been in the same situation. After 2 months of dating Mr. Pi Phi I was invited to his family reunion. Yup, so I met the parents, the siblings, the aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, etc. etc.

It was really overwhelming, but it was a good thing.

Definitly bring something. A nice bottle of wine, a dish for the picninc or a hostess gift (like others have suggested flowers are always a nice touch).

Bobby, that only works if his father's cover story was that he worked in the rare plant business.
