My Teacher Used to be a Man. . .
I heard about this on the radio this morning and now it on Yahoo News front page. . .
EAGLESWOOD TOWNSHIP, N.J. - To students at Eagleswood Elementary School, she used to be Mr. McBeth. Now, after undergoing a sex change, 71-year-old Lily McBeth is ready to return to teaching as Miss McBeth.
Despite criticism from parents, the school board on Monday stood by its decision to allow McBeth to resume working as a substitute teacher.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060228/...her_sex_change
Lily McBeth, a retired sales executive who fathered 3 children, was a substitute teacher for 5 years before a sex change operation.
As a parent, how would you feel if this was your child's teacher?

ROTFL at you falling out over the photo - and not the fact that he use to be a man! LOL But he is grinning like a Cheshire cat in that pic though....
But to answer CT4's question, I don't know. In terms of the article, this man/woman is in his/her 70s - so what can you do? I would have a problem if he did this while teaching. Explaining why Mr. McBeth now wears a dress and lipstick is a conversation that I shouldn't be FORCED into having with my elementary school child.

I'm conflicted in how I feel about this. Do I feel like explaining this to my daughter? Not really, but does that mean she shouldn't have the right to go back and teach? This is a hard call for me.

I'm saying though, the picture was the first thing I noticed. LOL. I'm really not sure what I would do.

I think I would too....I can't imagine having to explain this to a 6 year old....
Plus the article said he still has a deep voice. Can't you take hormones for that or something?

There are worse things to have to explain to children (like rape and murder). This seems to pale in comparison. I also think facing a situation like this would benefit a child in the future, in understanding the varying differences among people.

WHOA-LEE SNOT!!
That is one ugly "chick"! UGGGGGGGLAYYYYYYYY, gosh DANG that chick is ugly.
As far as what I would've told my kid(s), how do you explain to a prepubescent kid that a male's manhood is now drowning in a bottle of fermaldehyde?
I need to take a break. That pic made me think "she" was a tranny.

disclaimer - I don't have kids -
But - IF I was a breeder, I would rather have my kids taught by Mister Sister than someone with a criminal record.

Reminds me of when I worked at a Fortune 500 company in MN. One summer I worked with "Becky". "Becky" used to be "Bob" but then one day "Bob" woke up and decided he wanted to be "Becky". So "Becky" started wearing dresses and makeup (which didn't hide the stubble) and nailpolish. But "Becky" still used her mug that said "Number 1 Dad"
The next summer, my company paid for "Bob" to become "Becky" permanently. Now "Becky's" kids have 2 mommies.

He is still teaching. The article says that he reapplied for his position under his new name/identity. They had a vote and he was hired back on.
I don't know that many children could fully grasp his change and what it means for him and his life. I certainly couldn't explain it all that well b/c I don't fully grasp it myself. I'd really have to give it quite a bit of thought b4 I made my final decision. However, I would have to handle this issue separate and independant from other issues (like the greater difficulty of explaing rape/murder or being taught by a criminal/molester). I think that my position would be to try and protect my children from any and all forseen threats, not just the greater of 2 evils.
