"Hate Crimes at Columbia Must End"

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/loca...p-317093c.html

(there are some hints in the article that the two perps are SPE members)

2 Columbia students face rap in hate scrawl

BY KATHLEEN LUCADAMO
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Two Columbia University students have been busted for allegedly scribbling swastikas on a dormitory wall in the latest racial incident to rock the Ivy League school.

Matthew Brown, 20, and Stephen Searles, 19, were charged with criminal mischief after students fingered them as the hands behind a hate crime in Ruggles Hall, police said.

The duo reportedly used red and blue markers to line a suite hallway with swastikas, homophobic slurs and racial epithets on Friday, students said. Four women live in the suite, including a lesbian and a student involved in an interracial relationship.

Wow. You always hope that people who are supposed to be smart and educated are, well, actually smart and educated ... That's really horrible.

Unhappy

What a shame that two Young "Men" Would do this!

Imature as it sounds, it does happen!

One just wonders what kind of Home Life and upbringing they had!

Ignorance at its worst!

"The latest incident sparked a student-sponsored rally last night where groups expressed their concern. "Hate Crimes at Columbia Must End," one flyer read."

Such overreaction is so typical at Columbia. The maker of the flyer makes it sound like things like this happen every day but I highly doubt it since that campus is the most over-the-top politically correct place I have ever visited in my life.

Take a trip to Berkeley and UMich or any of those weird liberal arts schools where the women have facial hair too.

Well, the article said it was the fifth this year. How many hate crimes do you think it takes before wanting them to end is an "overreaction"?

I think ONE incident is enough to react like that. I'd flip if something like this happened at my school right now.

I agree ...

At my school, there were these signs and chalkings saying "IWM" all over the place last month. I've noticed this happening before and always been confused, since it never says what it stands for. So today in class, a girl told us she found out that it stands for "International Wigger Month" - have any of you ever heard of this, or is this just something idiots on my campus do?

The article that's linked in Hoosier's initial post says this is the 4th this year, so that means an average of one every 3 months. (or, using your statistics, one every 2.4 months). Hardly an epidemic.

Ah, okay. One hate crime every three months is your level of acceptable.

If it wasn't a hate crime against a stranger, but a vandalism of your own home, would once every three months still be okey dokey with you? Or would you maybe find one instance one too many?

I may be wrong in this interpretation but, Want to Be a N----(Black). I have heard this many times and it is because of certain actions by individuals.

It is never alright!

This is supposed to be a School of Higher Learning with a Great Reputation?

Something is defentely wrong there.

No, of course it isn't acceptable. But one hate crime every three months is hardly a sign that the world's gone mad. I am fairly certain that people are not skulking around the Upper West Side paralyzed by fear of magic-marker wielding madmen.

That's like saying that since the lifetime odds of being killed by a wasp, bee or hornet sting are about 69,000:1, then something must be done about this horrible stinging insect plague that is sweeping the country.

Even one person dying from a bee sting is too many but it does not mean that there is a bee epidemic out there.

And even one person having their dorm/home/hallway vandalized is too many but it simply does not make it an epidemic.

I don't think any of the protesters were saying it was an epidemic, but that it should end. There is a difference.

And racists have a bit more accountability than bees.

I gotta agree - if this latest incident was an indication of what happens on average once every three months, there is a serious problem with hate at the school.
