Pitt Dance Marathon raises over $36,000

http://pittsburghlive.com/x/tribune-.../s_400732.html

I believe this was a greek week event (Pitt's greek week events are spread throughout the year) because they quote the greek week chair. But there's not a very clear mention that this was a greek event.

There were 40 students dancing and over 1,500 people watching, which is a huge event for Pitt. They raise $36,713.09, which was the most successful fundraiser in the history of Pitt's student organizations. The money was going to UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) for cancer research.

ETA: Found another article http://www.pittnews.com/vnews/displa.../4393e9b2a3497

Seems it wasn't necessarily solely a greek event. There are quotes from a KKG, KD, XO, AEPi and LXA and the greek week chairs, but there were also some dancers sponsered by other student organizations.

That's great news. Dance Marathon was brought to Boston U. during my senior year, and it has turned into the top philanthropy on campus. Like at Pitt, it's not only Greeks who are involved, but Greeks do a signficant amount of the heavy lifting associated with planning and staging the event.

It's great that it went so well at Pitt - that's a solid amount of money for a very good cause.

woohoo, good for them! And the money is staying in town too, which is interesting. UPMC is a tremendous medical facility.

Yay for them! I partipated in Dance Marathon at USC (South Carolina, not Southern Cal) my junior year. It's a great organization! You're tired after those 28 hours but once you see those kids' faces it's all worth it!

That's why it was chosen. I believe they are committed to them for the next 4-5 years. Once all of the fundraising is complete they hope to have a research lab named after pitt greeks!

DM is also FSU's top student fundraiser, and it's not just the 32 hours of dancing, there are fundraisers throughout the whole year, including a D.A.N.C.E.R. week in the fall (around 100 days before DM).

Can someone remind me which school was it, UPenn or Penn State that has the 48 hour DM? That is just TOO much I think! Even our 32 seemed too long but apparently it's doable. Our dancers will definitely be allowed to miss chapter after that=)

Just going to toss this little fact out there, too: The Pitt Greeks are also the single biggest pool of blood donors in Pittsburgh!

Lol if I was prez and I was doing DM, an executive decision would have been made to move it to Tuesday...or everybody send in their reports to the VP=)

WOW!! This is great to hear, because my chapter is actually in the planning process of putting on our own dance marathon just like this. Ours should be set for sometime late in 2006, so I am very excited to see that another dance marathon has done so well.

Not to mention it being a requirement for chapter members. :-

ZTA at Carolina did that one year... the only excuse for them not to go to ZTA Day was if they were participating in Dance Marathon. They didn't have a ton of participation that year because of the ZTA Day conflict, but I respected them so much for making that decision. It shows a lot of class.
