Zetas removed from UM

The Tau Eta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta sorority has been kicked off campus by the university, ending a 29 year stay at the university.

Thomas Wallace, vice chancellor of student life and associate professor of leadership, would not say what specifically was done by sorority members in order to justify their removal from the Ole Miss Campus, but did say that it definitely involved hazing.

The M-Book states that the University of Mississippi prohibits hazing in any form.

The Zetas have been removed from the university and suspended from the Ole Miss campus until the fall semester of 2008. The Ole Miss chapter of the Zetas was founded in 1976 and became the third historically-black sorority on campus.

The sorority may petition for reinstatement in the fall of 2007, Wallace said.

Dean of Students Sparky Reardon would not comment on the judicial decision.

The sorority was removed from their house, which is currently located on sorority row.

When contacted about the issue, Pan-Hellenic representatives chose not to comment and instead deferred to the university division of student life.

The National Fraternity Executive’s Association (FEA) defines hazing as “any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule.”

These activities and situations include paddling in any form, creation of excessive fatigue, physical and psychological shock, quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, road trips or any other such activities carried on outside the confines of the house.

I am shocked by this be/c I have so many friends who are Zeta alumnae. I hope they are able to come back to Ole Miss.
