The June 13 decision by the Maryville Board of Education to ban the Rebel flag has caught the attention of a man known for protesting what he refers to as ``the cleansing of Southern history.''

H.K. Edgerton himself draws notice because he is an African-American

who promotes his cause by donning a Confederate uniform and marching with a Rebel flag.

He said he plans to march from Johnson City to Maryville to ``do a lot of educating'' and get support for his group.

Likely his best known activism involved his 2002 walk carrying a Confederate flag from Asheville, N.C., to Austin, Texas, in an attempt to get the attention of President Bush.

I make it a point not to knock people for what they believe as long as they have the guts to believe it openly. But this still just...I don't want to say negative things about it just b/c I don't agree, but that doesn't stop me from thinkin' it.

It could be worse

He could be one of the African Americans that speak at Klu Klux Klan rallies (and other "white power/nation" groups) - saw an interview on CBC a couple of months discussing the white power movements in North America...

Good point. Clearly, he's a confused creature who probably needs the Drop Squad along with the Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson and that ilk.

Are the writers sure he's not from Saluda, SC? There is a black guy that lives there who is a big supporter of the Confederate flag and you know where I'm from that is a huge issue. I met the guy at a Confederate rally that I covered in my past occupation as a newspaper reporter. They are still talking about separating from the union!

He already knows why it has become a symbol of oppression and racism. What he wants to do now is educate people as to what the Confederate Flag should REALLY stand for. Good for him, but it won't stop people from wearing it as a sign of bigotry or interpreting it as a sign of bigotry.

``The battle for the preservation of Southern history and culture is being waged most heatedly in our schools,'' Edgerton said in the news release. ``These students are being force-fed a whole system of propaganda that tells them Southern history is tainted by slavery and Confederate symbols are racist. They are being taught that the only acceptable way to express being Southern is to apologize for it. Well, I intend to put a dent in that.''

TRUTH is an absolute defense. This NATION's history IS tainted by slavery, moreso the South because the leaders of the States felt so strongly about the issue and its economics that they seceeded from the Union. Conferederate symbols ARE racist because of the reason for the existence of the Confederacy as stated above as well as the use of those symbols since, just like the Swastika.

Unfortunately, the freedom of expression includes the freedom to act a fool and defend your beliefs however twisted and out of touch with reality they may be.
