Mu Alpha Brother Wins Fellowship

Washington, D.C. – The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation recently named Georgetown University student Elisa Perez (COL ’05) a 2005 fellow in its thirteenth annual competition. The program supports the graduate study of existing and aspiring secondary school teachers of American history, American government and social studies.

i-Newswire, 2005-05-20 - “I congratulate Elisa on this prestigious award. She is an exceptional student, as demonstrated by her dedication both inside and outside the classroom,” said Jane McAuliffe, Dean of Georgetown College. “By contributing to the education of our nation’s youth, Elisa's work will be a great example of Georgetown's Jesuit tradition of service to others.”

Perez, a government major with a minor in Spanish, spent the majority of her undergraduate years giving back to the community through various extracurricular activities. As a member of Alpha Phi Omega, the only recognized service fraternity at Georgetown, Perez volunteered at rehabilitation centers, women’s shelters and children’s centers and built and repaired homes for those in need. She was also an active board member of the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano De Aztlan of Georgetown, a Washington-based program promoting education in the Latin community. Through the program, Perez tutored members of the Latino youth population. Perez was also selected to take part in a highly selective youth leadership program with the Latinas Learning to Lead Institute in Washington, D.C. She will pursue her graduate degree at the University of California-Los Angeles in the fall and plans to remain in the area to teach once her graduate work is complete. Perez is a native of El Monte, Calif., a community in East Los Angeles.

Perez is one of 47 fellows named in 2005 in competition with applicants from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and surrounding territories. The fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of each fellow’s course of study towards a master’s degree. In exchange for the financial support, recipients are required to teach American history or social studies in a secondary school for at least one year for each year of the fellowship.

The James Madison Fellowship is named for the fourth president of the United States and known “Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.” It seeks to recognize promising and distinguished teachers, while strengthening their knowledge of the history and principles of the United States Constitution and exposing the nation’s secondary school students to accurate knowledge of America’s constitutional heritage.

Founded by an Act of Congress in 1986, the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation is an independent establishment of the executive branch of the federal government. For additional information, visit www.jamesmadison.com.
