Auburn fraternity Delta Tau Delta will host a Military Appreciation Day Picnic Saturday April 30 to gather support for American troops fighting overseas.

Picnic events will include a 5K walk/run, competitive games and a care package competition in which the donor of the best care package will be rewarded.

The goal for the day is to collect care packages to send to troops overseas. Appropriate items for the packages are lip balm, tobacco products, sunglasses, magazines, letters, photos, Ramen Noodles, coffee, lotion, soap, foot powder, black cotton socks and Gatorade powder. Alcohol is not permitted.

Care packages will be judged by brothers of DTD, and the group with the best package or most packages submitted will win a prize.

"If the winner is a Greek fraternity or sorority, they will get $500 toward their philanthropy," Roman said. "Otherwise, we'll donate to the organization that wins."

The race begins at 10 a.m. The 5K costs $15 and all participants receive a T-shirt, but no prize will be awarded for first place. The race will go down part of Wire Road to Magnolia Avenue and end at Toomer's Corner.

Money raised from the 5K will be used to ship the packages.

?The picnic and competitive games begin at noon at the rugby practice field on Thach Avenue. People are welcome to bring coolers and food, but no glass is allowed.

Games include tug-of-war, a push-up competition, a potato-sack relay and a watermelon relay.

Roman said the watermelon relay is played like a baton relay, but instead of a baton, players pass off an oiled watermelon.
